The Israel Defense Forces said the 162nd Division has completed its deployment for activity in the northern sector and is ready to receive orders in line with the military's assessment of the situation. The announcement followed about two years of fighting in the Gaza Strip and a series of pre-planned exercises under the army's annual training programme for 2026, according to the IDF statement.

Israeli forces would continue operating to defend residents of the north, to strengthen what the military called the forward defence line, and to prevent Hezbollah from rearming and rebuilding, the statement said. It offered no further operational detail.

The division that spent the Gaza war inside Gaza

The 162nd is an armoured division nicknamed Ha-Plada, the Steel Formation. Its subordinate formations include the Givati and Nahal infantry brigades and the 401st “Iron Tracks” armoured brigade, and it fought in the 1973 war, both Lebanon wars and the 2014 Gaza campaign, according to a reference profile of the division. The same account records that the division concluded a tour in Gaza of nearly fifteen months, which the IDF announced on 17 February 2025.

Elements of the division have already served on the Lebanese front. JNS reported in August 2026 that the 401st Armoured Brigade had completed an eight-month deployment in southern Lebanon in which it destroyed more than 1,200 Hezbollah sites, seized over 600 weapons and dismantled tunnels running hundreds of metres.

What a “forward defence line” means in practice

The phrase is not decorative. Since Israeli troops re-entered southern Lebanon on 3 March 2026, the day after Hezbollah resumed cross-border fire, the military has held positions inside Lebanese territory and described them as forward defence, according to a timeline of the 2026 Lebanon war.

Stopping the rebuild

Preventing rearmament is the harder half of the mission, because much of what Israel is trying to stop is underground. In April 2026 the IDF said it had destroyed what it called the largest Hezbollah tunnel complex in southern Lebanon (around two kilometres long, in places more than 25 metres deep, with a parallel network alongside it) and said it had found evidence of Iranian funding and design and Iranian-made weapons inside, the Jerusalem Post reported. Israel has been striking Hezbollah's weapons infrastructure at scale since it named its campaign Operation Northern Arrows in September 2024, when it hit some 1,300 targets in a single day, per Times of Israel live coverage.

What is still unclear

The statement is short and gives almost nothing away. It does not say where the division deployed, which of its brigades moved, whether any of its troops have crossed into Lebanon, or what the 2026 exercises involved. It does not say what orders the division is waiting for, or from whom, and it gives no timeframe.

איך בדקנו את זה

The announcement itself (the division’s redeployment, the 2026 exercises and its stated tasks) comes only from the IDF statement of 21 March 2026, which was brief and gave no operational detail. Everything else here, including the division’s structure, its Gaza tour, its 401st Brigade’s Lebanon deployment and the state of the northern front, was researched separately and is cited in the text.
