A cyclist of about 45 was killed on Route 3 near Latrun Junction in central Israel after being struck by a vehicle, according to Magen David Adom, Israel's national emergency medical service. The service said its emergency call centre for the Ayalon region received a report at 09:44 of a rider hit on the stretch of road between Bkoa and Latrun. Its paramedics found the man with injuries to multiple body systems and no signs of life, and pronounced him dead at the scene.

Two Israeli news outlets identified the vehicle as a police patrol car. Ynet reported that a police car hit the cyclist, who died where he fell, and that the crash happened close to Latrun Junction. News.co.il gave the same account and added that police, together with a team of traffic accident investigators, had opened an inquiry into how the collision occurred.

Where the crash happened

Latrun sits in the Ayalon valley, in the lowlands between the coastal plain and the Jerusalem hills. Its junction is a known crossroads for traffic moving across central Israel. Route 3 is a road running through the area, and the section named by Magen David Adom links Bkoa, an agricultural community, with Latrun. The roads around Latrun are also used by recreational and sport cyclists, who often share lanes with cars and heavier vehicles.

Who reported what

Magen David Adom, usually shortened to MDA, is Israel's equivalent of a national ambulance and paramedic service, and a member of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. Its emergency number in Israel is 101. MDA routinely publishes short statements through its spokesperson's office when its crews attend serious incidents, giving the time of the call, the location and the condition of those treated. Its statements describe the medical picture and do not usually assign responsibility for a crash.

That pattern is visible here. MDA's statement refers only to a rider being hit by a vehicle and does not say what kind of vehicle it was. The identification of a police patrol car comes from Ynet, one of Israel's most widely read news sites, and from News.co.il, a news channel that publishes on Telegram. Neither outlet said where its information about the police car came from. News.co.il credited the photograph it ran with the report to MDA.

How such crashes are investigated

In Israel, fatal road collisions are typically examined by specialist police traffic accident investigators, known in Hebrew as bochanim. Their job is to reconstruct the circumstances of a crash from the scene, the vehicles and any witnesses or recordings, and their findings can be used to decide whether criminal charges are warranted. News.co.il reported that such a team had been brought in alongside the police.

When a police officer may have been involved in a death, questions about who conducts the inquiry are often raised, because an investigation of a police vehicle by police investigators can be seen as a conflict of interest. Israel has a separate unit within the Justice Ministry, the Department for Investigation of Police Officers, that examines suspected offences by officers. None of the reports says whether that department has been notified or has taken any role in this case.

The facts the reports agree on

  • A cyclist was struck and killed on Route 3 in the Latrun area.
  • MDA and Ynet both gave the rider's age as about 45.
  • Medical teams pronounced him dead at the scene.
  • Ynet and News.co.il both said the vehicle was a police patrol car.

What the reports do not say

None of the reports names the cyclist or gives any detail of his background. MDA's statement does not confirm that a police vehicle was involved, and no statement from the Israel Police describing the incident appears in the material. The reports do not say whether the patrol car was responding to a call at the time, how fast it was travelling, who was driving or whether the driver was hurt. There is no account of the weather, the road conditions or which direction either the car or the cyclist was moving in. Finally, the reports do not say which body will lead the investigation into the crash, or whether the Justice Ministry's police investigations department is involved.

איך בדקנו את זה

The death, location and approximate age come from Magen David Adom's statement and are matched by Ynet. The involvement of a police car is reported by Ynet and News.co.il but not by MDA, and the opening of an investigation is reported only by News.co.il; we have not independently confirmed either.
