US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee travelled to the West Bank town of Turmus Ayya, near Ramallah, where he met Palestinian residents including families of Palestinian Americans killed by settlers. The Times of Israel reported that he told reporters at the home of an American Palestinian resident that violent settlers should face "severe consequences", saying: "Crime is crime, terror is terror."

During the visit, video circulated showing settlers arriving on an all terrain vehicle close to the house where the ambassador was meeting the family, with Huckabee holding up his phone to record them. Ynet reported that Huckabee posted the footage himself, describing the arrivals as trespassers and writing that such conduct does not reflect the great majority of Israelis. In a separate alert, Ynet said the ambassador labelled the scene an act of terror by trespassers.

Where Turmus Ayya is and why it matters

Turmus Ayya is a Palestinian town in the Ramallah area of the central West Bank. It is unusual in that a large share of its residents hold United States citizenship, many of them families who divide their time between the town and the United States. The Times of Israel reported that the town has been the target of repeated settler attacks. That dual citizenship is what places the town inside the American embassy's consular responsibilities: attacks there involve US nationals, which gives Washington a direct standing to raise them with the Israeli government.

What the ambassador said

Huckabee framed his message as one about law enforcement rather than politics. He said the Israeli government "has a responsibility" to ensure the safety of Palestinians who are being targeted, and argued that acting was also in Israel's own interest, because its reputation suffers when a small group is taken to represent the wider population. He described those responsible as a tiny group of marauders and put their number at a few hundred, according to the Times of Israel account of his remarks.

The ambassador also addressed his own position on Israeli communities in the territory. The Abu Ali Express Telegram channel reported that, speaking to foreign and Arab media in the town, Huckabee said he supports Israeli settlement anywhere permitted under the Oslo framework, and that he prefers the terms Judea and Samaria, which he called biblical and historical, over the phrase West Bank, which he described as vague. Judea and Samaria is the Israeli official name for the territory; the Oslo Accords are the interim agreements signed by Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization that divided the territory into areas with differing degrees of Israeli and Palestinian control.

Gaza and "voluntary" departure

The visit also touched on Gaza. The Jerusalem Post reported that Huckabee said Israel is not planning to force Palestinians out of the Gaza Strip. Ynet reported that, asked about statements by Israeli ministers and about a plan associated with National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, he said there is no Israeli plan to uproot people from Gaza against their will. The phrase used in the Israeli coverage was voluntary transfer, a formulation that has been debated in Israeli politics and internationally.

A dispute over how the incident was described

Israeli outlets did not treat the ATV episode the same way. Channel 12 news presented the settlers' arrival near the family home as an unusual incident during the ambassador's visit, and the Times of Israel reported that unnamed people present told Channel 12 the ambassador had promised to send the video personally to US President Donald Trump. Abu Ali Express disputed that framing, arguing that the footage published by Channel 12 shows no friction and no confrontation, and asking why the movement of a settler vehicle through the village should be considered unusual at all.

Ynet also reported that extremist settlers had earlier sprayed graffiti insulting the ambassador.

What the reports do not say

The material does not identify the settlers seen on the ATV, and gives no indication that any complaint was filed or that police responded. It does not say whether the ambassador in fact sent the video to the US president; that account rests on unnamed people present, relayed by Channel 12. The reports do not name the Palestinian American victims whose families he met, do not date the attacks in which they were killed, and do not include any response from the Israeli government, the Israeli police or settler representative bodies. Nor do they say what, if anything, Washington intends to do next.
