Update, 5 September, 11:08 Israel time
The Israeli military has now described what its overnight strikes hit, and Lebanese sources have begun reporting casualties. The IDF spokesperson said the strikes hit Hezbollah operatives and infrastructure in southern Lebanon, including weapons storage facilities the military says were meant to be used for attacks on Israeli soldiers in the area it calls the Security Zone and on Israeli civilians, and said the strikes were carried out to remove what it called an immediate threat.
Casualty reports vary. The Times of Israel reported that Lebanese health authorities counted three dead in strikes near Nabatieh and Rmadiyeh, while Ynet reported 5 killed in Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon. The Hebrew-language monitoring channel Abu Ali Express, citing Lebanese outlets, gave a location by location breakdown: 2 killed and one wounded at Nabatieh al-Fawqa, one killed and 7 wounded at Rmadiyeh, about 6 wounded at Mifdoun, and a Syrian worker wounded at Ein a-Tineh. The channel also reported that Lebanese media described strikes in the western Bekaa area, including the Jabour ridge and the village of Ein a-Tineh, which it said had not been struck for several months.

❌BLATANT VIOLATION OF THE UNDERSTANDINGS: Hezbollah terrorists launched a drone towards IDF soldiers operating in the Security Zone in southern Lebanon. IDF soldiers opened fire and downed the drone. No IDF injuries were reported. In response, the IDF is now striking in Show more
The IDF says it is carrying out strikes on Hezbollah in southern Lebanon currently after the terror group launched an explosive drone at troops this evening. The drone that Hezbollah launched at Israeli forces was shot down by troops of the Commando Brigade, the military says, Show more
None of the casualty figures has been confirmed by Israel, and there is still no Hezbollah statement on the drone launch in the material available.
The story as first reported
Israeli soldiers operating in southern Lebanon shot down a drone that was launched towards them, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesperson said on Friday evening, adding that no Israeli soldiers were hurt. The military attributed the launch to Hezbollah, the Lebanese armed movement and political party, and said troops opened fire on the aircraft and brought it down.
Shortly afterwards, the IDF said it had begun striking in response, describing the drone launch as a blatant violation by Hezbollah. Emanuel Fabian, the military correspondent of The Times of Israel, reported that the drone was an explosive one and that it was downed by troops of the Commando Brigade, and that the military said it was carrying out a wave of strikes in southern Lebanon.
What the IDF said, and where the accounts differ
The core facts are consistent across the statements. A drone was launched towards Israeli soldiers operating in southern Lebanon, the soldiers shot it down, nobody on the Israeli side was reported injured, and Israeli strikes followed.
The details around that core vary slightly. The IDF's own posts describe simply a drone; Fabian's report describes an explosive drone and identifies the unit involved as the Commando Brigade, attributing that to the military. The IDF statement published on Telegram called the launch a violation without further qualification, while the version posted on the military's X account framed it as a violation of the understandings. Fabian's rendering of the same statement inserts a bracketed clarification that the violation was of the ceasefire. None of the material sets out the text of the arrangement being referred to.
What the 'Security Zone' means here
The IDF statements place the soldiers in what it calls the Security Zone in southern Lebanon. That is the military's own term for the area inside Lebanese territory where Israeli forces have been operating; the reports do not define its boundaries or say how far it extends from the border. Readers outside Israel should note that the phrase is the IDF's terminology rather than a neutral geographic description, and the Lebanese authorities' characterisation of the same area is not given in any of the material here.
Southern Lebanon is the strip of territory between the Litani River area and the Israeli border, historically the main area of Hezbollah's operational presence and the terrain over which Israeli and Hezbollah forces have exchanged fire.
Who Hezbollah is
Hezbollah is a Lebanese Shiite political party and armed organisation. It holds seats in Lebanon's parliament and maintains a military wing that Israel, the United States and a number of other governments designate as a terrorist organisation. The IDF uses that designation in its statements, which is why its wording refers to the group in those terms.
Drones have become a routine feature of exchanges along the Israel-Lebanon frontier, alongside rocket and anti-tank fire. Small uncrewed aircraft carrying explosive payloads are cheap, hard to detect on radar and can be flown at low altitude, which is why interceptions of the kind described here are often carried out by troops on the ground with direct fire rather than by air defence systems.
The ceasefire framing
Two of the accounts frame the incident against an existing arrangement between Israel and Hezbollah: the IDF's X post refers to the understandings, and Fabian's report makes the reference explicit as the ceasefire. The Jerusalem Post reported the same sequence of an intercepted drone attack followed by Israeli strikes on Hezbollah targets in Lebanon.
The significance of the framing is that both the launch and the Israeli response are being described by the Israeli military as taking place inside, rather than outside, a period of quiet governed by an agreement. The material does not include a Hezbollah statement, and does not indicate whether the group has claimed or denied the launch.
What the reports do not say
Several things are absent from all of the material and should not be assumed.
- There is no Hezbollah statement, and no independent confirmation from Lebanese authorities or from any party other than the Israeli military that Hezbollah launched the drone.
- The reports do not specify what was hit in the Israeli strikes, how many targets were struck, or whether there were casualties in Lebanon.
- No precise location is given for either the drone launch or the strikes beyond southern Lebanon and the area the IDF calls the Security Zone.
- The exact time of the launch is not stated; the IDF says it occurred earlier in the day, and Fabian reports it as taking place in the evening.
- The reports do not describe the agreement that the IDF says was violated, nor identify the parties or guarantors to it.
Everything above about the drone, the interception and the Israeli response rests on statements from the IDF, relayed directly and through reporting on those statements. At the time of the reports, the strikes were described as ongoing.

The account of the drone launch, the interception and the targets struck rests solely on IDF statements; the casualty figures come from Lebanese reporting and differ between outlets, and none has been confirmed by Israel.
