IDF releases drone video it says shows a child moving weapons in central Gaza

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has released video it says shows a child carrying weapons into a civilian home in the central Gaza Strip. In a statement on its official channel, the military said troops operating in Gaza had identified a militant, whom it called a terrorist, using the boy to move the weapons.

According to the IDF, the militant took advantage of the boy and put him forward as cover, a "human shield" in the military's words, so that Israeli forces would hold back from striking and stopping the transfer. The Times of Israel reported that the clip was drone footage and noted that the military did not say when it had been recorded.

Where the footage was filmed

The IDF's Hebrew-language post placed the incident in the area of the "central camps" (in Hebrew, machanot hamerkaz). Israelis use this term for the cluster of long-established Palestinian refugee camps in the middle section of the Gaza Strip, a narrow coastal territory bordering Israel and Egypt. Israeli broadcaster N12 also reported the release, repeating the military's description of a child moving military equipment into a civilian house in that area.

The reports do not name a specific camp, street or building, and the IDF statement as published does not identify the armed group it holds responsible beyond a general reference to terrorist organisations in Gaza.

What the reports describe

The accounts differ slightly on what the child was carrying. The IDF statement and most reports refer to weapons in the plural. The headline of the Times of Israel entry refers to a single weapon. Israeli commentator Amit Segal, who posted about the footage some hours before the other outlets, described a child receiving a rifle and then entering a house where, he wrote, Hamas operatives were active. Segal's post is the only one of the reports to name Hamas; the military's own statement does not.

Hebrew outlets used the term amlach, a common Israeli military abbreviation that combines the words for weapons and ammunition. Ynet's news alert used it in a short headline saying the IDF had published footage of a militant in Gaza using a child to move such equipment.

The military's English statement ends partway through a sentence describing what troops did after spotting the child, so it is not clear from the material what action, if any, followed.

The human shield accusation

A human shield, in the language of the laws of armed conflict, is a civilian whose presence is used to protect a military target from attack. Deliberately placing civilians in that role is prohibited under international humanitarian law. The Israeli military has for years accused armed groups in Gaza of operating from within civilian areas and of using residents, including children, to protect fighters and equipment. Palestinian groups and rights organisations have in turn disputed many Israeli accounts of specific incidents.

This release fits a pattern in which the IDF publishes selected clips from drone and surveillance cameras to support its account of how militants operate. Such footage is typically short, edited by the military and released without the surrounding material, which makes independent assessment difficult.

Emanuel Fabian, military correspondent for The Times of Israel, relayed the IDF's claims with attribution to the military and highlighted the absence of a date for the recording.

What the reports do not say

• When it was filmed. The IDF did not give a date or time for the footage, as the Times of Israel noted.
• The child's identity or age. None of the reports gives the child's name or age, or says what happened to him afterwards.
• Who was responsible. The IDF refers to a terrorist and to terrorist organisations generally. Only Amit Segal's post names Hamas, and it does not say how that was established.
• What followed. The published statement does not describe any strike, arrest or other action taken against the house or the people involved.
• Independent confirmation. No Palestinian source, Hamas statement or independent observer is quoted in the material, and none of the reports says the video was verified by anyone other than the military that released it.
