The Israeli military says it has detained three Palestinian Authority police officers accused of setting up a roadblock in Area C of the West Bank near the town of Beitunia, stopping an Israeli civilian there and assaulting him. In a statement issued by the IDF spokesperson, the military said the arrests were carried out this week and that the men are being questioned by Israeli security forces.
The IDF spokesperson said the officers had gone "beyond their authority to operate in those areas", and that the Israeli security establishment considers the episode "a serious breach of the mechanisms in place", one that endangered the life of the Israeli civilian and involved what the military described as severe and excessive force against him.

What the reports say happened on the road
The Times of Israel reported that the incident itself took place on August 23, when an armed Israeli settler, described by the outlet as an off-duty reservist, was stopped by the Palestinian Authority officers on a road near Beitunia and allegedly beaten. According to the same account, the officers put the man in their patrol car and drove toward Ramallah, but handed him over to Israeli forces a short time afterwards.
The IDF statement itself does not describe the man as a settler or a reservist. It refers only to an Israeli civilian who was detained and assaulted. Ynet's alert service described the person stopped in Area C as a reserve soldier. The military's own wording, in both its Hebrew and English versions, stays with the broader term. That difference in description is worth noting rather than smoothing over: the underlying event as reported is the same, but the label attached to the man is not identical across the accounts.
What Area C means
The West Bank is divided into three administrative zones under the interim agreements signed between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization in the Oslo process. Area A covers the main Palestinian cities and is under Palestinian Authority civil and security control. Area B is under Palestinian civil administration with shared security arrangements. Area C, which takes in most of the territory's open land, the main road network and Israeli settlements, remains under full Israeli civil and security control.
That division is the core of the Israeli complaint here. Palestinian Authority police are not authorised to deploy or to operate checkpoints in Area C. The Times of Israel noted in its report that the roadblock had been erected in Area C, territory that is supposed to be under Israeli control, which is why the military framed the case as an unauthorised deployment rather than simply as an assault case.
Who the Palestinian Authority security forces are
The Palestinian Authority, based in Ramallah, maintains police and security services in the areas it administers. Coordination between those services and the Israeli military has continued for years through liaison arrangements, and incidents in which Israeli civilians end up in the hands of Palestinian police are normally resolved through those channels. In this case, according to the Times of Israel account, the man was transferred to Israeli forces shortly after being taken toward Ramallah.
The Hebrew term used in the military statement for the Palestinian services is "hamangenonim", literally "the mechanisms", a standard Israeli shorthand for the Palestinian Authority's armed security branches. When the IDF says the episode was a serious deviation by "the mechanisms", it is pointing at those forces as an institution, not only at the individual officers now in custody.
The arrests
The military says the three officers were apprehended by IDF soldiers this week and are currently under questioning by security forces. Posting in English on X, the IDF repeated that the men had been involved in setting up the roadblock and in detaining and assaulting the Israeli civilian.
What the reports do not say
None of the accounts name the three officers, name the Israeli civilian, or say where the men are being held. The military has not said which Palestinian Authority service the officers belong to, nor whether they were acting on orders or on their own initiative when the roadblock went up.
There is no information in the material on the condition or injuries of the Israeli man, on whether he received medical treatment, or on why he was stopped in the first place. The reports do not say what he was doing on that road, and while the Times of Israel describes him as armed, the material contains nothing about whether his weapon featured in the encounter.
There is also no Palestinian Authority response in any of the reports, no comment from Ramallah on the arrests or on the account of the August 23 incident, and no indication of whether the officers will face charges in an Israeli court. The gap between the date of the incident and the arrests is not explained in the military's statement.

The account of the arrests comes from the IDF spokesperson, published on Telegram and X and relayed by Israeli outlets. Details of the August 23 incident, including the description of the man as an armed settler and reservist and the handover near Ramallah, are attributed to the Times of Israel; the military statement itself refers only to an Israeli civilian.
