IDF says munition was steered off target mid-strike over Gaza civilians

The Israeli military says a strike aimed at a Hamas operative in Gaza was diverted after a gathering of civilians was spotted nearby, once the weapon had already been released.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF), Israel's military, says it diverted a munition in flight during a strike in the Gaza Strip after civilians were identified close to the intended target. In a statement issued by the IDF spokesperson, the military said the strike had been planned against what it described as an operative of the military wing of Hamas, the Palestinian group that governed Gaza before the current war.

According to the statement published on the IDF's official Telegram channel, the operation took place on Sunday, and a gathering of civilians was spotted near the target while the strike was under way. Because the munition had already been released and could no longer be called off, the military said, it was steered away in real time so that it would not hit the people below. The IDF presented the episode as evidence of its procedures for separating combatants from civilians.

What the military actually said

The wording was near identical across the two channels the IDF used. A post on the military's English-language account on X, accompanied by video, said the diversion showed a commitment "to distinguishing between terrorists and civilians and to taking all possible precautionary measures to minimize harm to civilians." The Telegram version carried the same account of events and the same framing.

Both are official communications from the same body. This is not a case of separate organisations independently confirming an incident: it is one institution speaking on two platforms, and everything known about the episode at this stage rests on the military's own description of it.

How the IDF describes its strike procedures

The IDF's public position, repeated across the war in Gaza, is that strikes are subject to legal review and that operations are aborted or altered when civilians are identified in the vicinity. Terms the military uses in these statements, such as "precautionary measures," refer to obligations under the laws of armed conflict, which require parties to a conflict to take feasible steps to avoid harming people not taking part in the fighting.

The specific claim here is narrower and more technical than a decision to cancel a strike. The military says the weapon was already in flight, meaning an abort was no longer an option, and that its guidance was adjusted so it would land away from the civilians. Munitions of this type can in some cases be steered after release. The IDF statement does not say what kind of weapon was involved, nor how it was redirected.

Why the military publicises episodes like this

Israel's conduct in Gaza has been the subject of sustained international scrutiny, including from governments, United Nations bodies and human rights organisations, over the number of Palestinian civilians killed. The IDF spokesperson's unit regularly releases material intended to show that targeting decisions account for civilians, and video of aborted or diverted strikes has formed part of that output. The publication of this clip fits that pattern.

The military wing of Hamas is the armed branch of the movement, distinct from its political and administrative structures. The IDF routinely identifies strike targets in Gaza by that affiliation without naming the individual, and it did not name the person targeted in this case.

Hamas and Gaza in brief

The Gaza Strip is a coastal territory bordering Israel and Egypt, home to a dense civilian population. Hamas, designated a terrorist organisation by Israel, the United States, the European Union and others, has been the target of Israeli military operations there throughout the war. Independent reporting from inside Gaza remains constrained, which is one reason claims made by either side about individual incidents are difficult to check from outside.

What the reports do not say

A great deal is left open. The IDF did not identify the target, did not say whether he was hit, injured or unharmed after the munition was steered away, and did not say where in the Gaza Strip the incident occurred. The statement gives no time of day, no indication of how many civilians were in the gathering, and no account of whether anyone was hurt by the redirected munition when it landed elsewhere.

Nor is there any description of the video's provenance beyond the military's own release of it: the footage appears to be drone or targeting imagery, but the IDF does not label it, and the raw material has not been examined by an outside party. No Palestinian authority, medical source or humanitarian organisation has been quoted on the episode in the material available, and there is no independent confirmation that the events unfolded as described. Readers should treat the account as the military's version of an incident it chose to publicise, not as a verified reconstruction.
