The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the Shin Bet security service announced that an Israeli air strike in the Khan Yunis area of the southern Gaza Strip killed Ramadan Muhammad Ashahada Diab, whom they describe as the head of the Popular Resistance Committees in Khan Yunis. In a joint statement, the military and the security agency said the strike took place on Wednesday, the day before the announcement was published.
According to the Israeli statement, Diab had recently been pushing forward plans for attacks on Israeli soldiers and civilians and had worked to rebuild the military capabilities of Hamas. The Times of Israel, citing the military, reported that the IDF characterised this activity as being "in systematic violation of the ceasefire." Hebrew outlets including N12 and News.co.il carried the same announcement, and News.co.il reported that the strike was carried out from the air.

מהשטח
The IDF and Shin Bet said they killed Ramadan Muhammad Ashahada Diab, the head of the Popular Resistance Committees in Khan Yunis, in an airstrike in southern Gaza on Wednesday
Who the announcement came from
The claim originates with two Israeli bodies acting together. The IDF is Israel's military. The Shin Bet, which the IDF's English-language statement refers to by its formal initials ISA (Israel Security Agency), is Israel's internal security and intelligence service, and it frequently supplies intelligence for targeted strikes in Gaza. Joint announcements of this kind are the usual format when both bodies were involved in identifying and striking a target.
Joe Truzman, an analyst at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD) who tracks militant groups, described the killing as a notable one and noted that Israel said it relied on precision weapons and aerial surveillance for the strike. His post, as available, was cut off before giving further operational detail.
What the Popular Resistance Committees are
The Popular Resistance Committees are an armed Palestinian faction in Gaza. The IDF statement says the organisation was founded in 2000. The Times of Israel describes it as the third-largest militant faction in the Strip, behind Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad.

According to the IDF, the group was once affiliated with Fatah, the movement that dominates the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank, but is now tied to Hamas, to the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah and to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The military's post on X also says the group's members took part in the October 7 attack on Israel and went on to carry out attacks on Israeli troops during the war that followed. The Times of Israel likewise notes that the faction's members participated in the October 7, 2023 assault.
Where Khan Yunis is
Khan Yunis, also spelled Khan Younis in some English-language reports, is a city in the southern part of the Gaza Strip. It is the area in which the IDF says Diab led the local branch of the organisation. The Israeli statement places the strike in the Khan Yunis area rather than giving a more precise location.
How this fits the current situation
The Israeli announcement frames the strike as a response to activity that, in its account, breached the ceasefire in Gaza. The reports do not set out the terms of that ceasefire. Israel has in this period publicised strikes against individuals it accuses of preparing attacks or helping Hamas rebuild, and this announcement follows that pattern: it names the person killed, gives his role, and lists the activity attributed to him.
Wording differs slightly between reports. The IDF names Diab as the head of the organisation in Khan Yunis, while the Times of Israel and its military correspondent Emanuel Fabian describe him as a top commander in the group and then specify his Khan Yunis role. These descriptions are consistent with each other rather than contradictory.
What the reports do not say
All of the reports rely on the Israeli military and Shin Bet statement. None of them includes a response from the Popular Resistance Committees, from Hamas, or from health or civil authorities in Gaza, and none confirms Diab's death independently.
The reports do not say whether anyone else was killed or injured in the strike, what exactly was hit, or what time of day it took place. They do not give details of the specific attacks Diab is accused of advancing, or explain how he is alleged to have helped restore Hamas capabilities. They also do not explain why the announcement came a day after the strike.
