Israel's military said it destroyed three weapons storage facilities and a rocket-launching pit in strikes carried out across the Gaza Strip on Tuesday. In a joint announcement by the Israel Defense Forces and the Israel Security Agency, the two bodies said the depots belonged to Hamas and Islamic Jihad, and that the launch pit had been used to fire rockets toward Israeli territory over the course of the war.

The military said the depots held rockets, assault rifles and additional combat equipment, and that Hamas operatives had recently been seen arriving at the sites and taking weapons from them. According to Times of Israel military correspondent Emanuel Fabian, who relayed the announcement, the IDF said the stored guns were being used for "guarding and establishing control over the Gaza Strip."

Three weapon depots and a rocket-launching site were destroyed in Israeli airstrikes across the Gaza Strip yesterday, the IDF announces. The military says the weapon depots, belonging to Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, were used to store dozens of weapons, including Show more

Who issued the statement

The announcement came from two organisations jointly. The IDF is Israel's armed forces. The ISA, the Israel Security Agency, is the country's internal intelligence and security service, widely known inside Israel by its Hebrew name Shin Bet, an abbreviation drawn from the Hebrew for General Security Service. The ISA is not primarily a combat force: its role in operations of this kind is intelligence, identifying targets and the people using them, which is why its name appears alongside the military's on strike announcements. Joint IDF and ISA statements have become a routine format for reporting strikes in Gaza.

What a launch pit is

Rocket launch pits are prepared firing positions, often dug into the ground and concealed, from which rockets can be fired at Israeli towns and cities. Israel has described such positions as being embedded in built-up areas of Gaza. The military said this particular pit had been used repeatedly during the war rather than in a single incident, which is how it framed the significance of dismantling it.

The groups named

The statement named two organisations. Hamas is the movement that has governed the Gaza Strip and that carried out the assault on southern Israel which began the war. Palestinian Islamic Jihad, referred to in the IDF's English-language posts simply as Islamic Jihad, is a separate armed faction operating in Gaza with its own rocket arsenal, which has at times fought Israel independently of Hamas. Both are designated as terrorist organisations by Israel, the United States and the European Union.

The detail about control inside Gaza

The most specific claim in the announcement is not about rocket fire at Israel but about what the weapons were being used for inside Gaza. The IDF said on its official English-language account on X that Hamas operatives had recently been using weapons from the depots to establish control in Gaza and to carry out operations. Fabian's account of the announcement gives the fuller quoted phrasing about guarding and establishing control. Joe Truzman of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, a Washington-based research institute, summarised the same statement as saying the operatives had accessed the depots to arm operations and consolidate control.

Where the accounts differ in emphasis

The reports are consistent on the core facts: three depots, one launch pit, strikes on Tuesday, Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad named as the owners. They differ in the level of detail on what was inside. The IDF's X post lists rockets, Kalashnikov rifles and additional combat equipment. Fabian's report says the depots stored dozens of weapons, including rockets and assault rifles. Neither figure is broken down by site, and the two descriptions are not in conflict so much as differently specific.

What the reports do not say

The announcement does not name the areas of the Gaza Strip that were struck, saying only that the strikes were in several places. It does not give a time of day. It does not say whether anyone was killed or wounded, and none of the reports carry casualty figures from Gaza authorities or any independent tally. There is no description of how the sites were identified, no account of the intelligence involved, and no indication of whether the depots were in residential buildings, tunnels or open ground.

Neither Hamas nor Palestinian Islamic Jihad had commented in any of the material reviewed here, and no non-Israeli account of the strikes is available in it. Everything above about the targets, their contents and their use rests on the joint IDF and ISA statement, relayed by journalists and analysts who saw it. Israel.com has not independently confirmed what was struck or what the sites contained.

The event was reported by the IDF spokesperson's joint statement with the Israel Security Agency and relayed by Times of Israel correspondent Emanuel Fabian and FDD analyst Joe Truzman, whose accounts agree on the number of sites and the groups named. All claims about the targets and their contents come from the Israeli statement alone and have not been independently verified.
