Israel Maps the 10-Kilometre Belt It Holds Inside Lebanon
The IDF published a 'Yellow Line' running from the Mediterranean to Mount Hermon, and said five divisions are operating south of it even under the ceasefire.

The Israel Defense Forces published a map on Sunday 19 April 2026 showing what it called its Yellow Line in southern Lebanon: the forward defence zone where Israeli forces are currently operating. The military said the zone is part of an updated security arrangement put in place after the ceasefire, with activity concentrated in a belt reaching up to roughly ten kilometres inside Lebanese territory.
The mapped area runs from the maritime sector in the west towards the eastern slopes near Mount Hermon, with sections reaching north towards the Litani River and in places slightly beyond it. "These days, five divisions and naval forces are operating parallel to the south of the front defence line in Southern Lebanon, to destroy the terrorist infrastructure of the Hezbollah terrorist organization in the area and to prevent a direct threat to the northern settlements," the IDF said. The zone is intended to block direct attacks, including raids and anti-tank fire, while allowing continued operations against Hezbollah infrastructure, and officials said the army is keeping freedom of action there under the ceasefire framework, including strikes from the air and on the ground when necessary. A ten-day ceasefire had come into effect on Friday night.
A new line drawn over two older ones
Southern Lebanon already has lines on it. The Blue Line, drawn by the United Nations in 2000, is not a border and has never been one: UNIFIL, the UN force in Lebanon, states plainly that there is no agreed border between Lebanon and Israel and that the Blue Line is a withdrawal line, identified to confirm that Israeli troops had left Lebanon under Security Council resolution 425. UNIFIL fields more than 10,000 peacekeepers from around 50 countries across an area of operations of about 1,060 square kilometres.
The second line is the Litani River, roughly 30 kilometres north of the frontier. Under the November 2024 Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire, the area south of the Litani was to contain no armed presence other than Lebanon's official forces, the Lebanese army was to deploy 10,000 soldiers there, unauthorised military infrastructure was to be dismantled, and a monitoring mechanism chaired by the United States and including France was to verify compliance. Israeli withdrawal was to take place over a maximum of 60 days.
The Yellow Line is a third thing again: a line Israel drew itself, marking where its own forces stand, and the map showed it crossing the Litani in places rather than stopping short of it.
The truce this map was published under
The ceasefire referred to in the statement began on 17 April 2026 and was, at the outset, a ten-day pause brokered by the United States after the first direct Israel-Lebanon talks in decades. PBS NewsHour reported that Netanyahu agreed to it while stating that Israeli troops would not withdraw and would maintain a ten-kilometre security zone in southern Lebanon, and that Hezbollah responded that Israeli occupation of Lebanese land gave Lebanese people the right to resist it. Four days later the IDF published a map of exactly that zone.
The pause did not stay at ten days. The Council on Foreign Relations recorded that President Trump announced a three-week extension on 23 April after mediating between the Israeli and Lebanese ambassadors in Washington, with the United States pledging to help Beirut protect itself from Hezbollah and a senior Hezbollah official saying the group would not respect decisions taken in those talks. Further extensions followed, including 45 days agreed on 15 May.
How Israeli forces got that deep
The belt on the map is the product of a ground campaign that began weeks earlier. Al Jazeera reported that on 16 March 2026 the IDF launched what it called limited and targeted ground operations in southern Lebanon, with troops of the 91st Division working around the strategic town of Khiam, and that Katz said displaced Lebanese residents would not return to homes south of the Litani until northern Israel's security was guaranteed. Speaking separately at a ceremony in Sha-Nur on 19 April, Katz put it in the same terms the map does: "We maintain this status when the IDF is deployed in the security zone in Lebanon up to the anti-tank line 10 kilometers deep, from the sea line in the west to the mouths of Mount Hermon in the east."
Katz said the military had been ordered "to operate with all force, from the ground and from the air, even during the ceasefire", that "any structure that threatens our forces and any suspected IED-laden road must be destroyed immediately", and that Israel's objective was a demilitarised zone up to the Litani line, warning that Israel would keep operating if Lebanese authorities did not act.
The cost of holding it has been counted publicly. The Times of Israel reported on 31 March that ten Israeli soldiers had been killed in southern Lebanon since the ground offensive began, alongside two civilians killed by Hezbollah rockets.
What the map does not settle
The IDF did not say how long the Yellow Line is meant to stand, what conditions would move it, or how many troops are inside the belt. It did not say how the line relates legally to the ceasefire understandings or to UN resolution 1701, and no Lebanese or UN acceptance of it was reported in the statement. Israeli reporting on the map noted that the mapped zone crosses the Litani and takes in the Beaufort Ridge, but the practical question of what happens to Lebanese villages inside the belt was not addressed.
