Update, 6 September, 15:08 Israel time

The Israeli military has now confirmed on the record that it struck the disused hospital building, closing the gap between its earlier general statement and the Lebanese reporting. The Times of Israel reported that the IDF said a command centre operating out of a former hospital was among the targets of its morning strikes, alongside weapons depots and other buildings it said Hezbollah used to prepare attacks.

According to the same report, the military said Hezbollah operatives engaged in what it described as artillery work and surveillance had recently been operating from the command centre at the hospital compound, and that all the strikes were intended to remove threats. An alert issued by Ynet carried the military's wording as describing the struck hospital as a headquarters used by Hezbollah for observation.

The IDF also restated that the strikes followed the drone attack on its troops in the Ali Taher Ridge area, according to The Times of Israel, tying the location of the drone launch response to the ridge named in earlier Israeli briefings.

The military has still not published evidence for its account of how the compound was being used, and no response from Hezbollah, the Lebanese government or the hospital's owners appears in the new material.

The story as first reported

An Israeli airstrike destroyed the building of Ghandour Hospital in the southern Lebanese town of Nabatieh al-Fawqa on Sunday morning, according to Lebanese media reports cited by The Times of Israel. Those reports, including a post by the Lebanese newspaper Annahar, said the facility held no patients and no staff at the time it was hit.

The Israel Defense Forces, the country's military, said it was striking Hezbollah sites in response to a drone attack on Israeli troops operating in southern Lebanon earlier that morning. The military did not issue a statement specifically about the hospital building. Israeli security officials, quoted by Ynet, said the structure was empty and had been serving as a Hezbollah command post.

Where Nabatieh al-Fawqa is

Nabatieh al-Fawqa is a town in southern Lebanon, in the hilly area inland from the Mediterranean coast and north of the Israeli border. The wider Nabatieh region is one of the main population centres of the south and has been repeatedly named in reporting on Israeli air activity against Hezbollah, the Lebanese Shiite movement that is both an armed force and a political party. Ynet reported that Israeli aircraft struck the town along with the village of Arab Salim, and that the strikes followed an Israeli evacuation notice for residents in the area.

What the Israeli military said, and what it did not

The IDF's public framing was of a response, not of a specific target list: strikes on Hezbollah infrastructure after drones were launched at its forces operating inside southern Lebanon. That leaves a gap between the Israeli statement and the Lebanese reporting. The military account names Hezbollah sites in general; the Lebanese account names a hospital building in particular. The claim that the building functioned as a Hezbollah headquarters comes from unnamed Israeli security officials speaking to Ynet, not from an on-the-record military spokesperson.

Hospitals carry particular weight in this conflict. Medical facilities are protected under the laws of armed conflict, and Israel has argued in a series of cases in both Lebanon and Gaza that specific buildings lost that protection because armed groups were using them. Those arguments are contested, and in this instance the Israeli military has so far not made one publicly about Ghandour Hospital.

The account from Abu Ali Express

Abu Ali Express, an Israeli-run channel that monitors and translates Arabic-language media, reported that Lebanese outlets described the hospital building as completely destroyed, and added that the structure had been empty of people for an extended period. The same channel said that on the previous night Lebanese channels reported an Israeli surface-to-surface missile strike on the Ghandour family association building, which stands opposite the hospital, and said the site appeared to be used by Hezbollah operatives.

That sequence, a strike on a nearby building followed by the destruction of the hospital structure the next morning, is reported only by that channel among the material available here. The Times of Israel account and the Ynet account both begin with the morning strike.

The wider pattern

Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon have continued at intervals since the ceasefire understandings that followed the last round of open fighting with Hezbollah, with Israel saying it is acting against attempts to rebuild the group's military capacity. Israeli evacuation warnings issued in Arabic before strikes, of the kind Ynet described here, have become a recurring feature of that activity.

Ynet also reported, in the same dispatch, that Israeli security sources linked the drone launches to Hezbollah's interest in halting Israeli operations at Ali Taher, and that the military separately announced a readiness exercise for a multi-arena scenario, an internal drill that Ynet said caught even senior generals by surprise. Those elements are carried by that outlet alone.

What the reports do not say

None of the reports give a casualty figure, and none say that anyone was hurt in the strike on the hospital building. There is no information on when the hospital ceased operating as a medical facility, who ordered it closed, or where its patients went. The material does not say how much advance time the evacuation notice gave, or which areas it covered.

The Israeli military has not published evidence for the assertion that the building served as a Hezbollah command post, and that assertion is attributed to security officials rather than to the IDF itself. The Lebanese reporting cited does not address the Hezbollah claim at all. No comment from Hezbollah, from the Lebanese government or from the hospital's owners appears in the material, and there is no independent confirmation of the extent of the damage beyond the Lebanese media descriptions and the imagery circulated with them.

איך בדקנו את זה

The destruction of the building is described by Lebanese media; the claim that it served as a Hezbollah command centre now comes from the IDF on the record rather than from unnamed officials, but remains unsupported by published evidence and unaddressed by Hezbollah or Lebanese authorities.
