Update, 5 September, 22:08 Israel time

The man who fired at officers in Kiryat HaSharon has died of his wounds, and Israeli outlets report that he was himself a member of the security forces. N12 reported that the suspect who shot at police and was neutralised had been killed, and described him as a member of the security forces. News.co.il reported that the man killed in the Netanya shooting was a Border Police fighter, having earlier said he was a member of the security forces.

Police have ruled out a nationalist motive. News.co.il reported that after an assessment at the scene, suspicion of a security-related incident was dismissed, and said the episode began with reports of an armed suspect firing in the middle of a residential neighbourhood, prompting a pursuit by the shift officer, further officers and members of a local standby squad. According to that account the suspect fired at the forces at the end of the chase, they returned fire, and no members of the forces were hurt.

Ynet reported, citing assessments, that the suspect was believed to be suffering from combat trauma, the Hebrew term used for a soldier affected by battle shock. The journalist Amit Segal wrote that the man who fired at police and was shot dead was apparently in that condition. That assessment has not been confirmed by police in the material published so far, and the man has still not been named.

The story as first reported

A man opened fire at police officers in the Kiryat HaSharon neighbourhood of Netanya, on Israel's central coast, and was shot by officers at the scene, according to Israel Police statements carried by Israeli and English-language outlets. The Times of Israel reported that police said the suspect was shot dead after firing at officers, and that no officers were reported hurt.

Magen David Adom, Israel's national emergency medical service, said its Sharon region dispatch centre received a report of gunfire in the Kiryat HaSharon neighbourhood at 19:07. In its statement, the service said its paramedics and medics at the scene reported that the gunman had been neutralised by police forces and that there were no additional casualties at that stage, with a further update to follow if needed.

Where this happened

Netanya is a coastal city between Tel Aviv and Haifa, one of the larger municipalities in central Israel and a well-known destination for French-speaking and other immigrant communities. Kiryat HaSharon is a residential neighbourhood on the city's eastern side. Magen David Adom organises its operations by region, and calls from Netanya are handled by its Sharon area dispatch centre, which answers the emergency number 101, the Israeli equivalent of an ambulance line.

What the police said

Police described the man as a suspect who fired at a police force in the area. Israeli reports said the circumstances were under examination. News.co.il reported in an early item that the suspect had fired at officers in the Kiryat HaSharon area and had been neutralised, and that a district commander, Commissioner Amir Cohen, was on his way to the scene. N12 also reported that Central District Commander Amir Cohen was travelling to the site. The two descriptions of his post are not identical in the material available: one report names him as the district commander without specifying which district, the other identifies him with the Central District, the police command covering much of central Israel outside Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.

Reports differ on the gunman's condition

The accounts published do not agree on whether the man died. The Times of Israel, citing police, said he was shot dead. Ynet reported that his condition was defined as critical and said that apart from the suspect there were no other casualties. Magen David Adom used the Hebrew term for neutralised, which in Israeli police and military usage covers both a person killed and a person shot and incapacitated, and did not state whether he had died. We are reporting both versions rather than choosing between them.

The weapon and the sequence

Ynet reported that before the shooting the suspect had been filmed carrying a long gun, a category that in Israeli reporting distinguishes rifles and similar weapons from handguns. The report did not say who filmed him or where the footage came from. Ynet also quoted a woman living in the area describing residents as frightened and running indoors.

Motive not established

No motive has been given. The Times of Israel said the reason for the shooting was not immediately clear and that police indicated more details would follow. Ynet described the background as still unclear. In Israel, an initial distinction is normally drawn between a nationalistically motivated attack, which is handled as terrorism, and criminal or personal incidents, which are investigated by the police alone. None of the reports assigned this incident to either category, and none referred to it as a terror attack.

Shootings involving long guns in Israeli cities are frequently, though not always, connected to organised crime, and the police have in recent years described gun violence within Israeli society as a central enforcement priority. No source in this material linked the Netanya incident to any such context, and that connection should not be assumed here.

What the reports do not say

Several basic points remain open. The man has not been named, and no age, residence or nationality has been published. It is not stated how many officers were present, how many fired, or why police were in the area to begin with, whether they had been called about the man or encountered him during other duties. No account explains what the earlier footage of the man with a long gun showed beyond the fact that he was carrying one, or how it reached the media.

The reports also do not say whether the man had a criminal record, whether the weapon was legally held, or whether anyone else was involved. There is no information about damage to property or about whether nearby residents were instructed to shelter in place. Finally, the discrepancy over whether the man was killed or critically wounded has not been resolved in the material published so far, and no updated police statement clarifying the point appears among the reports.
