Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu attended a cornerstone laying ceremony for a memorial to fallen members of Israel's Arabic speaking Christian community, held in the Lavi Forest near the Golani Junction in the Galilee. According to the statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office, Netanyahu was accompanied by his wife, Sara, and delivered remarks at the site.

In those remarks, the prime minister framed the monument as an answer to what he described as a coordinated effort to depict Israel and its armed forces as abusers of minorities. "Israel is the only place in the Middle East where the Christian community is flourishing and growing," he said, adding that elsewhere in the region Christians "are persecuted, they emigrate, or they are slaughtered." The remarks were released in English translation by the government.

Who the memorial is for

The memorial is dedicated to fallen members of Israel's Arabic speaking Christian community. Christians make up a small minority of Israeli citizens, most of them Arabic speakers concentrated in the Galilee and in mixed cities. Military service is compulsory for most Jewish Israelis and for Druze men, but not for Arab citizens, including Christians, who may volunteer. The press release does not state how many names the memorial will carry, nor whether it commemorates soldiers, police officers, security personnel, civilians, or a combination.

Where the ceremony was held

The Lavi Forest sits in the Lower Galilee in northern Israel, planted woodland near the Golani Junction, a major road intersection on the route between Tiberias and the Haifa area. The junction takes its name from the Golani Brigade, one of the Israel Defense Forces' infantry formations, which maintains a memorial and museum site in the vicinity. Placing a commemorative monument in a northern forest follows a familiar Israeli pattern, in which memorial groves and plaques are set within Jewish National Fund woodland rather than in urban squares.

The argument Netanyahu made

The prime minister's speech placed the memorial inside a wider political dispute over Israel's international standing. He said Israeli soldiers are being portrayed as war criminals and as persecutors of minorities, describing the first charge as absurd when applied to what he called "the most moral army in the world," a phrase Israeli leaders have used for years in defending the conduct of the IDF.

He then described Israel as "an island of progress, an island of tolerance and an island of security" in a region he characterised as hostile to difference. Netanyahu said the ceremony was intended to counter what he called a big lie, arguing that repetition can make a falsehood appear true. He closed by reversing the framing of protection, saying that Israel does not only defend Christians but that Christians also protect Israel, a reference to those from the community who serve in the security forces.

The reference to Sweida

In the same remarks Netanyahu cited the Druze, another religious minority with communities in Israel, Syria and Lebanon. He said Israel had fought in Sweida to prevent what he termed the total slaughter of Druze there, and that Israel continues to protect them. Sweida is the main city of a predominantly Druze region in southern Syria. Israeli Druze have long-standing family ties across that border, and the community's men are subject to the Israeli draft. The press release gives no further detail on the operations he referred to, no dates and no figures.

Why a government does this

Cornerstone ceremonies in Israel are formal events marking the start of construction, often attended by political leaders, and they are typically followed by a dedication once the structure is complete. The announcement was published by the government as an item under the 37th Government, the coalition Netanyahu has led since its formation. The publication is an official communication rather than independent reporting, and its content is the prime minister's own account of the event and of Israel's record on minorities.

What the announcement does not say

The material is limited to a short summary and excerpts of the speech. It does not identify who initiated or is funding the memorial, who designed it, when construction is expected to finish, or what form the monument will take. It names no individuals being commemorated and gives no count of the fallen. It does not list other officials, clergy or community representatives present, and it includes no response from Christian community leaders to the prime minister's framing.

Nor does the release address the criticism Netanyahu was responding to. It does not identify the governments, institutions or organisations behind the accusations he described, and it offers no data on the size or trajectory of Christian populations in Israel or in neighbouring states. Because only the government's own statement is available, the claims in the speech remain attributed to the prime minister and have not been independently checked here.
