Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised Israeli security forces for what he described as a successful operation in Samaria, in a short statement issued in Hebrew by his office and published in English translation on the Israeli government's official website. According to the statement released by the Prime Minister's Office, the forces destroyed dozens of lathes used for manufacturing weapons, seized dozens of weapons and arrested people wanted over involvement in terrorism.

Netanyahu added that counter-terrorism activity was continuing at full strength in Judea and Samaria, Gaza, Lebanon and anywhere else that Israel's enemies attempt to threaten the state. The statement did not name the units involved, the towns or villages where the operation took place, or how long it lasted. It is a media statement rather than a military briefing, and no accompanying operational detail was published alongside it.

What and where is Samaria

Samaria is the northern part of the territory that Israel officially calls Judea and Samaria, the biblical names used in Israeli government and military language for the area more widely known internationally as the West Bank. The southern part is Judea. Samaria contains Palestinian cities including Nablus and Jenin as well as Israeli settlements, and it is administered on the Israeli side by the military's Central Command, with civil functions handled through the Civil Administration. When an Israeli official refers to an operation in Samaria, the reference is to this area rather than to a single town.

Why lathes are the target

A lathe is a machine tool that shapes metal by rotating it against a cutting edge. In the context of Israeli raids in the West Bank, the term refers to workshops where metalworking equipment is used to produce improvised firearms and parts. Israeli forces have described such workshops as a supply route for locally made weapons that do not depend on smuggling across borders, and the destruction of the machinery, rather than only the confiscation of finished guns, is presented as the point of these raids. The Prime Minister's statement uses the plural, dozens of lathes, without specifying whether they were found at a single site or across several.

The four fronts named in the statement

Netanyahu's phrasing grouped together Judea and Samaria, Gaza, Lebanon and unnamed other places. Each of those refers to a distinct Israeli security theatre with its own command structure and legal framework. Gaza is the coastal territory to the southwest of Israel; Lebanon borders Israel to the north and is where the Iran-backed movement Hezbollah operates. Listing them in one sentence is a familiar rhetorical construction in Israeli government statements, signalling that operations in the West Bank are being framed as part of a single, continuing campaign rather than as isolated police-style raids.

How this kind of announcement usually works

Statements of this type are issued by the Prime Minister's Office, the body that handles Netanyahu's public communications, and are typically written in Hebrew first and then translated for the English-language section of the government portal. They frequently follow, rather than precede, an operational announcement from the Israel Defense Forces spokesperson, which normally carries the specifics: the brigade or unit involved, the locality, the number of suspects detained and any injuries. In this case only the Prime Minister's remarks were published on the government page, so the commendation is available without the underlying military account attached to it.

What the statement does not say

A single official statement is the entire basis for this report, and much is missing from it. It does not identify where in Samaria the operation was carried out, or over what period. It does not say which forces took part, whether the Israel Defense Forces, the Border Police or the Israel Security Agency, known as the Shin Bet. It gives no exact figures, only the word dozens, applied both to the lathes destroyed and to the weapons seized, and it does not say what kinds of weapons those were. The number of people arrested is not given, nor are the allegations against them beyond the phrase used in the translation, involvement in terrorism.

The statement also does not record whether there were any casualties on either side, whether shots were fired, or whether any Israeli personnel were hurt. No Palestinian response is included, and no independent account of the raid was available in the material reviewed for this report. The published text is a translation from Hebrew, so the original wording may differ in emphasis from the English version quoted here. Until the military publishes its own account, the operation is documented publicly only through the Prime Minister's commendation of it.
