Iranian state TV blames US for ship strike near Strait of Hormuz

Iranian state television has attributed the attack to the United States, according to the Hebrew-language monitoring channel Abu Ali Express, which reported that state TV said an Iranian merchant ship was attacked by the US near Qeshm Island, leaving one person dead. No US official is quoted in that report, and no Iranian body beyond state television is named as the source of the accusation.

Haaretz, citing Iranian state media along with the Associated Press and Reuters, placed the vessel off Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz and said it was struck early on Sunday, with one killed and four wounded. Haaretz also noted that the incident came a day before Tehran is due to brief regional countries on its disputed handling of shipping traffic in the waterway.

Separately, The Times of Israel reported that the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations, a body affiliated with the British navy, said a vessel transiting the Strait of Hormuz was hit by an unknown projectile, that a fire broke out afterwards and that local authorities evacuated the crew. UKMTO did not name the vessel or link its advisory to the ship described by Iranian state media, so the two accounts remain formally separate.

The story as first reported

An Iranian commercial vessel was struck off the southern coast of Iran, killing one person and wounding three others, according to Iranian state media cited by The Times of Israel, which attributed the account to the governor of Qeshm County.

The Israeli broadcaster N12 reported, citing Iranian media, that the vessel was hit by fire off the southern Iranian coast, with the same toll of one killed and three wounded. Ynet's alerts channel also carried the report of a fatality in a strike on a commercial vessel in the south of the country. None of the reports named the vessel, its owner, its cargo or its destination, and none identified who or what struck it.

Where Qeshm is and why it matters

Qeshm is an island in the Persian Gulf, close to the Iranian mainland and to the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow waterway that connects the Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and the open sea.
