A festive meal planned for thousands of Israeli travelers at the Chabad house on the Thai resort island of Phuket was canceled at short notice on the eve of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, after local security officials asked that it not go ahead. Ynet reported that the meal had been arranged for some 2,000 backpackers and holidaymakers, and that organizers notified them that security officials had demanded the event be dropped over concern about violence, telling travelers it was dangerous and asking them not to come near the area.

The cancellation was tied to a pro-Palestinian demonstration in the vicinity of the building. N12 reported that the meal was called off following a demand by local security authorities, against the background of a protest planned outside the venue. Ynet described a demonstration that had been going on in the area for hours. According to the report, the remaining prayer services and holiday meals were expected to take place as normal from the following day.

What a Chabad house is, and why one sits in Phuket

Chabad, formally Chabad-Lubavitch, is a Hasidic movement that runs a global network of outposts known as Chabad houses. Each is typically staffed by an emissary couple, called a shliach and shlucha in Hebrew, and functions as a synagogue, kosher kitchen, and drop-in center for Jewish travelers and local residents alike. The houses are best known among Israelis for large communal meals on Jewish holidays, which in backpacker hubs can draw crowds far larger than any local Jewish community.

Phuket, an island in the Andaman Sea in southern Thailand, is one of the most heavily visited destinations for young Israelis, particularly after military service. Thailand as a whole has long been a fixture on the post-army travel circuit, and Chabad houses in Bangkok, on the islands and in northern Thailand routinely host Israeli travelers for Shabbat and festivals. A seated meal for roughly 2,000 people, the figure reported by Ynet, reflects that scale rather than the size of a resident congregation.

Rosh Hashanah and the timing

Rosh Hashanah marks the start of the Jewish year and is observed with evening and daytime prayer services and festive meals. The first meal falls on the eve of the holiday, which is when the canceled Phuket event had been scheduled. News.co.il reported an anti-Israel demonstration outside the Phuket Chabad house on the eve of Rosh Hashanah, publishing the item the same day.

Because the holiday meal is the single largest gathering point for Israeli travelers on the island, a cancellation at short notice leaves many of them without the communal arrangement they had planned around. According to the notice cited by Ynet, prayers and the other holiday meals were still going forward on subsequent days, meaning the disruption was described as limited to the opening evening.

Where the reports differ

The Hebrew-language reports do not fully agree on the sequence. Ynet describes a pro-Palestinian protest that had already been under way in the area for hours before the meal was called off. N12 frames the demonstration as one that was planned outside the site, with the cancellation coming in advance of it. News.co.il reports a demonstration outside the Chabad house without addressing the order of events. The reports agree on the core facts: the meal was canceled, and the request came from security officials.

The wording of the instruction to travelers, as quoted by Ynet, was brief and cautionary rather than explanatory, warning that the situation was dangerous and asking people to stay away.

What the reports do not say

None of the material identifies the security body that made the request, or whether it was Thai police, another local authority, or officials acting in coordination with Israeli representatives. The reports do not give the size of the demonstration, who organized it, how close it came to the Chabad house, or whether there were any arrests, injuries or property damage.

There is also no information in the material on the exact location of the venue within Phuket, on whether Thai authorities issued any public statement, or on any comment from Chabad emissaries in Thailand or from Israel's foreign ministry. The reports do not say whether travel advice for Israelis in Thailand was changed, or whether similar steps were taken at other Chabad houses in the country. Ynet's account that the remaining holiday prayers and meals would proceed is attributed to the notice sent to travelers and is not independently confirmed elsewhere in the material.

איך בדקנו את זה

The cancellation was reported by Ynet, N12 and News.co.il; the figure of 2,000 travelers and the quoted warning to stay away come from Ynet alone, and no statement from Thai authorities or Chabad appears in the material.
