A live interview with the senior Hamas official and co-founder Musa Abu Marzouk on the pan-Arab channel Ghad TV ended with him shouting at the presenter and cutting the conversation off, according to a report issued through the Press Service of Israel on 11 October 2025. Abu Marzouk, who lives in Qatar, had been defending the group’s record, saying Hamas “fulfilled its national duty”.

The presenter then asked whether what Hamas did on 7 October 2023 had led Palestinians towards liberation. After a pause, Abu Marzouk answered: “No sane person would claim that on October 7, with just a thousand or so fighters, it was possible to liberate Palestine.” He added: “Please, at least make your questions respectful.” When the presenter replied that he was putting the questions being asked on the streets and by residents of Gaza, Abu Marzouk raised his voice: “These are your questions! Show some respect for yourself. I don’t want to talk to you. I don’t want to see you. Cut it out. Cut it out. Go to hell!”

Who Musa Abu Marzouk is

Abu Marzouk is not a fringe spokesman. According to a profile by the European Council on Foreign Relations, he was born in Rafah in the Gaza Strip in 1951, helped found Hamas in 1987, sits on its politburo and has served as deputy head of the movement’s external leadership, as well as leading its reconciliation contacts with the rival Fatah faction. The same profile records that he has divided his time between Gaza, Egypt and Qatar since leaving Syria in 2012.

Why so much of Hamas’s leadership speaks from Doha

Hamas set up a political office in Qatar in 2012 after senior figures left Damascus during the Syrian civil war, Al Jazeera reported in September 2025, citing Qatar’s ambassador to Washington, who said the arrangement followed a request from the United States and was intended to create indirect lines of communication with the group. Al Jazeera listed Abu Marzouk among the senior Hamas figures based there. It is this arrangement that puts Hamas leaders within reach of Arab satellite channels while the movement’s fighters are in Gaza.

The week the interview aired

The exchange was broadcast days into the end of the war. FDD’s Long War Journal reported that the United States-brokered ceasefire took effect on 13 October 2025, two days after the report of the interview, and that Hamas went on to release the 20 remaining living hostages and to begin returning the bodies of the dead.

How it was read in the Arab press

The report said commentators in Arab media treated the outburst as a sign of the tension inside Hamas since the start of the war, and as evidence of a widening gap between the leadership and Arab public opinion. Jamal Nazzal, a spokesman for Fatah, called the exchange “a disgrace that exposes the moral and political bankruptcy of a crumbling group that can no longer look people in the eye”. The Jerusalem Post carried the same quotes and the same account of the broadcast on 11 October 2025.

What the account does not tell us

The presenter is not named, and the report does not say whether the interview resumed after the outburst or how Ghad TV handled it. The commentators described as writing in the Arab media are not identified, and neither Hamas nor Abu Marzouk is quoted responding to the coverage afterwards.

The quotations from the broadcast and from Fatah's spokesman come from the Press Service of Israel report of 11 October 2025 and match the Jerusalem Post's account of the same interview published the same day. Abu Marzouk's role and the reason Hamas leaders are based in Qatar were verified against the European Council on Foreign Relations and Al Jazeera.
