Gadi Eisenkot, the chairman of the Yashar! party, is to come under the security responsibility of the Shin Bet, Israel's domestic security service, from Sunday morning, his party announced on Saturday evening. Ynet reported the party's statement, adding that during the election campaign so far, Eisenkot's protection had not involved the Shin Bet.

The arrangement is not a conventional detail of government bodyguards. According to the party, Eisenkot will be guarded by a private security company that will be, in the words of the statement, "directed and operated directly" by Unit 730. News.co.il reported that the Shin Bet had notified Yashar! that the new arrangement would begin in the morning, and The Times of Israel likewise cited the party as saying it had been told by the security service that a protective detail would start the following morning.

What the Shin Bet and Unit 730 are

The Shin Bet, formally the Israel Security Agency and known in Hebrew by the acronym Shabak, is responsible for counterterrorism and internal security inside Israel. Among its duties is the protection of senior officials and other people the state judges to be at risk. Unit 730 is the part of the Shin Bet associated with that protective role, guarding dignitaries and holders of senior office.

The reports describe a hybrid model: the people physically guarding Eisenkot will work for a private company, while the operational direction will come from the Shin Bet unit. That distinction matters for reading the headlines. Short alerts, including Ynet's initial flash, summarised the news simply as Eisenkot's security becoming the Shin Bet's responsibility. The fuller statements make clear that the guards themselves are private contractors working under Unit 730's instructions.

Who Gadi Eisenkot is

Eisenkot is a former chief of staff of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), the country's military, and later served in politics. He now heads Yashar!, the party through which he is running in the current Israeli election campaign. Ynet filed its report in its section covering the elections, and noted that throughout the campaign his protection had been arranged without Shin Bet involvement.

The decision about who receives state protection in Israel is not purely a party matter. The party's own framing, echoed in each report, is that it was informed of the change by the Shin Bet rather than that it requested or chose the arrangement itself.

How the sources frame it

The accounts agree on the core facts: the Shin Bet is taking responsibility, the change takes effect the next morning, and a private firm directed by Unit 730 will carry out the protection. They differ slightly in presentation. Political commentator Amit Segal posted the news as a message from the Shin Bet addressed to Eisenkot, while Ynet, News.co.il and The Times of Israel attributed it to an announcement by the party itself. None of the reports quotes a statement issued directly by the Shin Bet, so the details as published all trace back to what Yashar! said it had been told.

What the reports do not say

None of the reports explains why the change is happening now, or whether it follows a specific threat assessment, a request from Eisenkot or his party, or a general policy applied to election candidates. They do not say who will pay for the private security company, how large the detail will be, or how long the arrangement will last, including whether it is tied to the election period.

The reports also do not name the private company, and they do not describe how Eisenkot had been protected during the campaign before this point beyond saying the Shin Bet was not involved. The Shin Bet's own account of the decision has not appeared in any of the material, and no comment from the agency is cited.
