The Jerusalem District of the Israel Police said it had completed its investigation into the killing of Benyahu Raz and that the district prosecutor's office had filed an indictment against seven suspects. The announcement, issued by the police, described the case as closed on the investigative side, with the evidentiary file handed to prosecutors.
According to the police statement, officers from the Lev HaBira station (the station covering the centre of Jerusalem, its name meaning “heart of the capital”) reached the scene and found two injured people. One of them, named in the statement as Benyahu Razi, was found dead there. After a situation assessment by the Jerusalem District Commander, Superintendent Avshalom Peled, the case was assigned to what the statement called the Crime Fighting Unit, known in Hebrew by the acronym Yalap, of the Zion District. Six suspects were arrested on the first night. Further arrests followed on suspicion of involvement in the incident, tampering with evidence and assisting other suspects. Investigators worked alongside the Jerusalem District Prosecutor's Office to build the file, the statement said.
Where a case like this sits in the Israeli police machine
The Israel Police is a single national force divided into six regional district commands, one of them the Jerusalem District, according to the force's published organisational structure. Districts are broken down further into regions and local stations. Serious violent cases are typically lifted out of the local station that first responds and given to a district investigative unit: here, the Zion crime-fighting unit. The most complex national-level files go higher still, to Lahav 433, the umbrella body formed in 2008 from five separate investigative arms and widely described as Israel's equivalent of the FBI.
From arrest to indictment: how the clock runs
An arrest in Israel does not start a trial. Police must return to court to extend a suspect's detention while they gather evidence, and prosecutors then decide whether to file charges. In a separate Central District killing this year, the court approved the State Attorney's request in May 2026 to extend the detention of 16 minors while the file was completed, with formal indictments expected only afterwards. The Jerusalem statement marks the equivalent moment in this case: the point at which the police say the evidence is exhausted and the prosecution takes over.
A killing in a country still counting a high homicide toll
Israel's homicide numbers have stayed at levels the country had not seen for decades. The Abraham Initiatives, which tracks crime-related killings, counted 252 victims in Arab society in 2025, the highest on its record and, as The Times of Israel reported on 31 December 2025, more than 80 per cent of all violent killings in the country that year. Research by the Taub Center, published in February 2024, found that homicides in the Jewish population rose from 38 in 2022 to 66 in 2023, reversing a long decline, while Arab-society homicides more than doubled in the same year. The police statement in this case did not place it in any wider pattern.
What the statement did not say
The police did not say what led to the violence, what relationship, if any, the seven charged had to one another or to the man who died, or which specific offences each of them faces. No ages, home towns or names of suspects were released, and the statement did not say whether all seven are in custody. The release also rendered the victim's name two ways (Benyahu Raz in the headline, Benyahu Razi in the text) and gave the date of the original emergency call in a compressed form, “26.07.11”, that it did not explain.

איך בדקנו את זה
The account of the killing, the arrests and the indictment is taken solely from the Israel Police statement published on 4 August 2026; Israel.com did not independently verify it. The homicide figures come from the Abraham Initiatives via The Times of Israel and from the Taub Center, and the description of detention procedure from Jerusalem Post reporting on a separate case.
