Yair Golan, chairman of the Israeli opposition party The Democrats, has filed a defamation suit against Sara Netanyahu, the wife of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, over remarks she made in an interview on Channel 14. Ynet reported that Golan is demanding NIS 2.5 million in compensation, and that he turned to the courts after she refused to apologise for what she said on air.

The claim centres on an interview in which, according to the same report, Sara Netanyahu echoed a conspiracy theory alleging that Golan had advance knowledge of the October 7 massacre. The Jerusalem Post reported the suit as seeking NIS 2.55 million over the October 7 remarks. The two figures cited by the outlets differ slightly, and the sources reviewed here do not explain the discrepancy.

What the lawsuit argues

Ynet reported that the claim states an adviser to Netanyahu watched the interview before it was broadcast. Golan, according to that account, presents this as evidence of what he calls advance planning to make him a legitimate target, a phrase that in Hebrew political usage refers to stripping a person of protection against violence by delegitimising them publicly.

The suit also cites a rise in incitement against him. Ynet quoted Golan describing a jump of 450% in incitement and saying that threats against him intensified. The report adds that the claim refers to intelligence bodies having warned of concrete threats to his life. The material available does not identify which bodies issued those warnings, or when.

Who Yair Golan is

Golan leads The Democrats, a party on the Israeli left formed from the merger of Labour and Meretz, and sits in the opposition to Netanyahu's governing coalition. He is a former deputy chief of staff of the Israel Defense Forces. He became widely associated with the events of October 7 after reports that he drove south during the Hamas attack on communities near the Gaza border and assisted in the rescue of civilians from the area, an episode that made him a recurring subject of political argument in Israel.

The conspiracy claim referenced in the suit inverts that record, suggesting foreknowledge rather than response. Ynet's report describes Sara Netanyahu as having echoed the theory in the interview rather than originating it.

Channel 14 and its place in Israeli media

Channel 14 is an Israeli television channel widely identified with support for Netanyahu and his coalition, and it has become the preferred venue for interviews with figures close to the prime minister. Its programming is a frequent target of complaints from opposition politicians, who accuse it of amplifying attacks on government critics. The channel's editorial line is one reason the detail about an adviser previewing the interview, as reported by Ynet, forms part of Golan's argument.

The political commentator Amit Segal noted the same sequence: that the suit followed Sara Netanyahu's refusal to apologise for her remarks on the channel.

Defamation suits in Israeli politics

Israel's defamation law allows civil claims for damages over statements that harm a person's reputation, and such suits have become a recurring instrument in disputes between politicians, journalists and public figures. Sums claimed in filings are opening positions rather than awards, and cases frequently end in settlement, withdrawal or a far smaller sum than the one named in the writ. Filing a claim does not establish that the statements at issue were defamatory; that is for a court to determine.

Sara Netanyahu is not an elected official but is a prominent public figure in Israel and has herself been party to litigation in the past. The reports reviewed here do not indicate that she has responded publicly to the filing.

What the reports do not say

The material does not give the date of the Channel 14 interview, the name of the programme or interviewer, or the exact words Sara Netanyahu used. It does not name the adviser said to have watched the interview before broadcast, and it does not say how Golan's team learned of that. The court in which the claim was filed is not identified in the reports available.

The figure of 450% attributed to Golan is not sourced in the material to any named monitoring body, and the reports do not say over what period the increase was measured or what baseline was used. No response from Sara Netanyahu, her representatives, the Prime Minister's Office or Channel 14 appears in the reports. Finally, the difference between the NIS 2.5 million cited by Ynet and the NIS 2.55 million cited by The Jerusalem Post remains unresolved in the sources.

איך בדקנו את זה

The filing was reported by Ynet, The Jerusalem Post and the commentator Amit Segal; the amount claimed differs between Ynet and The Jerusalem Post and both figures are given here. Details of the lawsuit's contents, including the 450% incitement figure and the intelligence warnings, rest on Ynet's account alone, and no response from Sara Netanyahu appears in the material.
