A nine-year-old boy is in serious condition in intensive care at Rambam Hospital in Haifa, sedated and on a ventilator, after developing encephalitis, an inflammation of the brain. Israel's Ministry of Health said in a statement that a sample sent overnight to ministry laboratories confirmed the suspicion that the illness was caused by Naegleria fowleri, a rare amoeba found mainly in warm freshwater.

According to the ministry, a preliminary epidemiological investigation found that the boy had swum at Kursi Beach on the Sea of Galilee about a week before he was admitted to hospital. Ynet reported the following day that the boy's condition remained serious.

What Naegleria fowleri is

The amoeba is a microscopic organism that lives in warm freshwater. The Ministry of Health says that in extremely rare cases it can cause a severe infection of the central nervous system. Infection happens when water carrying the organism enters through the nose and the amoeba reaches the brain. The ministry stresses two points that are often misunderstood: the illness is not caused by drinking water, and it does not pass from one person to another.

The ministry describes the disease as very rare but says it can progress quickly, and that it carries a high mortality rate.

How often this happens

The ministry statement puts the global count at fewer than 500 reported cases, including two diagnosed in the United States over the past year. In Israel, it said, three cases have been reported in recent years. That framing matters for readers weighing the risk: millions of visits are made each year to freshwater sites in Israel, and the ministry has not issued any closure or bathing ban in connection with this case.

Where Kursi Beach is

Kursi Beach sits on the eastern shore of the Sea of Galilee, the large freshwater lake in northern Israel known in Hebrew as the Kinneret. The lake is one of the country's main summer recreation destinations and a significant source of fresh water. Its shoreline is lined with public and paid beaches, and swimming there is routine for Israeli families through the warm months.

The hospital treating him

Rambam Health Care Campus in Haifa is the largest hospital in northern Israel and serves as the region's referral centre for complex and critical cases, including intensive care for children. Patients from across the north, including the Galilee and the Golan area, are transferred there when specialist treatment is required.

What the ministry advises

The health ministry set out precautions for anyone swimming in warm freshwater. Its guidance is to keep water out of the nose as far as possible, particularly when jumping in, diving, or submerging the head, and it suggests holding the nose shut or wearing a nose clip. It also recommends not digging into or disturbing the sediment in shallow water, where the organism may be present in greater concentrations.

On symptoms, the ministry says urgent medical attention is needed if a person who has been in warm freshwater develops fever, a severe headache, nausea or vomiting, especially when followed by a stiff neck, confusion, unusual drowsiness, or a change in consciousness. It advises telling medical staff about the water exposure.

Two reports, one picture

The two accounts available are consistent rather than conflicting. The government statement carries the medical and epidemiological detail, including the laboratory confirmation and the swimming history. The Ynet alert adds only that the child's condition had not improved by the next morning, describing him as infected by the amoeba in the Kinneret. Neither account attributes a different cause or a different location.

What has not been said

The reports do not name the boy, give his home town, or say when exactly he was admitted to hospital. They do not state the date of his swim beyond the ministry's estimate of roughly a week before hospitalisation, and they do not describe how the infection was first suspected or how long he had symptoms before reaching intensive care.

There is no information on whether the water at Kursi Beach has been sampled or tested, whether any other bathers have been examined, or whether the beach remains open. The ministry did not say what treatment the boy is receiving. It also did not detail the three earlier Israeli cases it referred to, including when they occurred, where, or how they ended.

The ministry said it is continuing to follow the case and will inform the public as needed. Any further change in the boy's condition would come from the hospital or the ministry.

The medical details, laboratory confirmation and swimming history come solely from a Ministry of Health statement published on the Israeli government website; a Ynet alert the following morning independently reported that the boy's condition remained serious. Israel.com has not independently verified the diagnosis or his current condition.
