A Man Stabbed in a Bnei Brak Study Hall, an Arrest in Beit Shemesh

Police say the 52-year-old victim and the 45-year-old suspect knew each other, and that the background to the killing was criminal rather than religious or nationalist.

Israel Police arrested a suspect in Beit Shemesh after a manhunt that followed a fatal stabbing in Bnei Brak, according to a police statement issued on 20 May 2026. A report came in during the afternoon of a man stabbed at a yeshiva and kollel complex on Ha'Ari Street, after which the attacker fled the scene.

The victim, a 52-year-old resident of Bnei Brak, was taken away in a serious condition and later pronounced dead in hospital. The commander of the Dan region, Commander Elad Klein, held a situation assessment with his officers and the case was handed to the region's crime-fighting unit, known by its Hebrew acronym Yalap. The background to the incident was criminal, police said, and a preliminary inquiry found that the victim and the suspect had known each other beforehand. The victim had made no previous complaints. The suspect, aged 45, is homeless. Officers from the Bnei Brak and Ramat Gan station, working with the Beit Shemesh station, located him in Beit Shemesh and arrested him for questioning.

The city, and the kind of building this happened in

Bnei Brak is a densely built city immediately east of Tel Aviv, described by Britannica as a north-eastern suburb of Tel Aviv-Yafo founded in 1924 by Hasidic Polish-Jewish immigrants, originally agricultural and later industrial. It has since become one of the principal centres of Haredi, or ultra-Orthodox, Judaism in Israel and is dense with institutions of Talmudic study.

A yeshiva is an academy devoted mainly to the study of the Talmud and associated religious texts. A kollel is the same kind of institution for married men, usually paying a modest stipend so that students can learn full time. In a city like Bnei Brak the two are often housed together in a single complex that is busy from early morning until late at night, which is what the phrase "yeshiva and kollel complex" in the police statement denotes.

The suspect was found in Beit Shemesh, a city of about 177,000 people as of 2024, roughly 30 kilometres west of Jerusalem and itself a centre of Haredi and Modern Orthodox life, an hour or so from the Tel Aviv area by road.

Where a killing like this sits in Israel's crime figures

Israel's homicide problem is heavily concentrated: the Times of Israel reported at the end of 2025 that 252 people were killed in crime-related violence in Arab society that year, the highest figure on record, and that Arab citizens, roughly a quarter of the population, accounted for more than 80 per cent of violent killings in the country. As of June 2025 only about a tenth of murders in the Arab community had been solved, on figures from the Abraham Initiatives cited in the same report.

By that measure a criminally motivated stabbing in a Haredi city is unusual, and the police statement is careful to place it outside the categories readers might otherwise assume. It says the background was criminal, and it says the two men knew one another. It does not say the killing had anything to do with the institution where it happened.

What the police did not say

The statement did not name either man, describe the nature of their prior acquaintance, or give a motive. It did not say whether the suspect has been charged or brought before a court, whether he was known to police, or what he was doing at the complex. It gave no account of how officers tracked him to Beit Shemesh. A suspect arrested for questioning has not been convicted of anything.
