The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) says its troops killed two Hamas operatives in an overnight strike in the northern Gaza Strip after spotting them leaving Kamal Adwan Hospital. According to the IDF spokesperson's statement, one of the two placed explosive devices that he had carried out of the hospital, and both men were then targeted.

The military named one of the dead as Muhammad Tammous, whom it describes as a sniper in the military wing of Hamas who also worked for Gaza's civil defense service. The Times of Israel reported that, by the IDF's account, the explosives were laid near the Yellow Line with the aim of hitting Israeli troops, and that the strike came soon after the pair were identified. The second man has not been named in any of the reports.

What the IDF says happened

The account comes from the military itself, issued on its official Telegram channel and on X. The statement says the operation took place overnight on Wednesday. Troops identified two men exiting the hospital, one of them planted explosives that had come from inside the building, and both were killed in a strike.

The IDF also alleges that the two had been working on attacks from within the hospital in recent days. Quoted by The Times of Israel, the military said the pair "advanced terrorist plots from inside the hospital" and were involved in efforts to rebuild Hamas's capabilities. The IDF's post on X made the same claims and framed Tammous as someone the world had been shown as a civil defense worker while he served as a Hamas sniper.

Israeli Hebrew-language outlets carried the statement within minutes. N12, an Israeli television news outlet, relayed the military's version, including the description of Tammous as working in parallel for the civil defense service. Ynet and the Telegram news channel Abu Ali Express also published the IDF spokesperson's account.

Kamal Adwan Hospital

Kamal Adwan Hospital is a medical facility in the northern part of the Gaza Strip. The IDF has repeatedly accused Hamas of using hospitals and other medical sites for military purposes, and its statement on this incident opens by repeating that accusation. The Times of Israel noted that the military was restating a long-running allegation against the group in this announcement.

The Yellow Line and the civil defense service

The "Yellow Line" is the term the Israeli military uses for a line inside Gaza associated with the positions of its forces. The reports place the planted explosives in the area of that line and say the target was IDF troops. None of the reports describes the exact location of the devices or whether they were found or detonated.

The civil defense service in Gaza is an emergency and rescue body. The Times of Israel described it as Hamas-run. The IDF's central claim about Tammous is that this civilian role overlapped with membership of Hamas's armed wing.

Small differences between accounts

The reports largely repeat one source, the IDF, so there is little substantive disagreement. There are differences in emphasis. The IDF's headline frames the incident around a single operative who planted explosives, with a second Hamas member killed in the same strike, while The Times of Israel and N12 lead with two operatives killed. Abu Ali Express described the planting as happening toward morning, whereas the IDF statement says overnight. None of the outlets says it has seen footage itself, though Abu Ali Express wrote that the planting was documented.

What the reports do not say

All of the details here come from the Israeli military. None of the reports includes a response from Hamas, from the hospital, or from Gaza's civil defense service, and none reports any independent confirmation of the identities of the dead or of the claim that the explosives were taken from inside the hospital.

The reports do not name the second man killed, do not say what kind of explosive devices were involved or how many there were, and do not say whether any IDF soldiers were endangered or hurt. They also do not explain what the alleged plots from inside the hospital involved, or whether the hospital was functioning at the time and whether patients or staff were affected.
