The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it killed a commander in the military wing of Hamas in a strike in the Khan Younis area of the southern Gaza Strip, announcing the operation several days after it took place. In a statement published by the IDF spokesperson, the military identified the man as Muhammad Suleiman Byouk and said he had entered Israeli territory during the October 7th Massacre.

The military said the strike was carried out on Thursday. Throughout the war, and including in the period before the strike, Byouk worked to place explosive devices around the Gaza Strip with the aim of harming Israeli soldiers, according to the IDF. In a separate posting, the IDF said he also planned and advanced attacks on Israeli civilians and troops and acted to rehabilitate Hamas, which the military described as a systematic violation of the ceasefire. The statement said he was killed in order to remove the threat he posed.

What the IDF said, and what it did not

The announcement is a standard form of Israeli military communication: a named individual, a claimed role, a location and a general description of activity, released after the fact. The IDF did not describe the munition used, did not say whether anyone else was killed or wounded in the strike, and did not set out the evidence behind its account of Byouk's role on October 7 or his subsequent activity. There is no independent confirmation in the available material of the identification, and no Hamas statement on the claim appears in the reports.

Khan Younis and the geography of the strike

Khan Younis is the main city of the southern Gaza Strip, south of Gaza City and north of Rafah on the Egyptian border. It has been one of the principal areas of Israeli military operations during the war and has absorbed large numbers of displaced residents from further north. Israeli strikes there have been reported repeatedly through the conflict, and the area remains a focus of activity even under the ceasefire framework referenced in the IDF statement.

Hamas's military wing

The phrase the IDF used, a commander in the military wing of Hamas, refers to the armed branch of the movement, known as the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, which is organised into regional brigades and battalions across the Gaza Strip. The IDF regularly publishes the names of commanders at various levels it says it has killed, describing their functions in general terms rather than giving a formal rank. In Byouk's case the military did not attach him to a named brigade or battalion, and did not say what area or unit he was responsible for.

The October 7 reference

The central element of the IDF's claim is that Byouk was among those who crossed into Israel during the Hamas-led assault. The Times of Israel, reporting the military's announcement, said the IDF placed that infiltration on October 7, 2023, and that he was involved during the war and recently in planting bombs directed at Israeli troops. Israeli military announcements about individuals accused of taking part in the assault carry particular public weight in Israel, and the IDF has issued a series of such notices over the course of the war.

How the reports differ

Coverage of the announcement was consistent on the essentials: a strike in the Khan Younis area on Thursday, a named Hamas military wing commander, and the claim of participation in the October 7 attack. The transliteration of the name varies between outlets, appearing as Muhammad Suleiman Byouk in the IDF's own English material and as Mohammed Suleiman Byouk in the Times of Israel's account. Joe Truzman of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, a Washington-based research institute, also relayed the military's account of a Thursday strike in Khan Younis. The Jerusalem Post carried an image credited to the IDF Spokesperson's Unit captioned September 17, 2026; the IDF's own text dates the strike to two days before its announcement.

Open questions

The material does not say how the strike was carried out, whether there were other casualties, or where exactly in the Khan Younis area it took place. It does not explain how Byouk was identified or tracked, nor what position he held within the Hamas command structure. There is no response from Hamas, no independent account from Gaza health authorities, and no detail on how the strike relates to the ceasefire arrangements the IDF says Byouk was violating. Everything set out above concerning his role and activity rests on the Israeli military's statement.
