The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said on Monday that an air strike in Khan Younis, in the southern Gaza Strip, killed a commander in Palestinian Islamic Jihad whom the military says took part in the October 7, 2023 attack on southern Israel. In a statement issued through its spokesperson, the military named the man as Mohsen Farid Said Abu Hadaf and described him as the head of a rocket cell in the organisation.

According to the IDF, the strike took place last weekend, and Abu Hadaf had infiltrated the Kissufim area during the October 7 assault. The Times of Israel reported the military's account, which said that more recently he had been advancing attacks on Israeli troops and civilians, "in systematic violation of the ceasefire." The IDF added that he "was eliminated in order to remove the threat he posed." The claims come from the military and have not been independently confirmed; no Palestinian Islamic Jihad response appears in the material available.

Who Palestinian Islamic Jihad are

Palestinian Islamic Jihad, often abbreviated PIJ and referred to in Hebrew reports by the acronym גא"פ, is an armed Palestinian faction that operates in the Gaza Strip alongside Hamas. It is smaller than Hamas but maintains its own armed wing and its own rocket arsenal, and it has fought rounds of conflict with Israel both jointly with Hamas and on its own. A "rocket cell commander", the role the IDF attributes to Abu Hadaf, is a field-level position responsible for a small unit that stores, positions and fires projectiles rather than a senior political or strategic post.

Where Khan Younis and Kissufim are

Khan Younis is one of the main cities of the southern Gaza Strip and has been a focus of Israeli operations throughout the war. Kissufim is an Israeli kibbutz in the western Negev, close to the boundary with Gaza, and it lends its name to the surrounding area and to a nearby crossing point. Communities in that belt, sometimes described collectively as the Gaza envelope, were among those attacked when gunmen crossed the fence on October 7, 2023.

The phrase used in Hebrew coverage, "טבח 7 באוקטובר", translates as the October 7 massacre, the standard Israeli term for that day's attacks. The IDF's English statements use the same wording.

Why the military frames it as a ceasefire violation

The IDF says Abu Hadaf's recent activity breached a ceasefire that is in force. The military's statement does not set out what those alleged attacks consisted of, when they were planned or attempted, or whether any took place. Joe Truzman of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, who tracks armed groups in the region, summarised the announcement as the IDF saying Abu Hadaf had been planning attacks on Israeli troops and civilians in violation of the ceasefire.

Israel has continued to announce individual strikes in Gaza during the ceasefire period, typically describing them as removals of specific threats. Announcements naming an operative and tying him to the October 7 attack are a recurring feature of the military's messaging, and they are usually published days after the strike itself, as in this case.

How the reports line up

The accounts are consistent on the core details. Emanuel Fabian, the military correspondent of The Times of Israel, relayed the same identification and location, as did Israeli broadcasters. N12 reported the strike occurred last weekend in Khan Younis and credited imagery to the IDF spokesperson's unit. Ynet's alert described the target in the same terms, as an Islamic Jihad operative who raided Kissufim on October 7. The IDF's own post on X carried the identical wording about the infiltration and the ceasefire.

One small variation: the Israeli Air Force statement quoted by The Times of Israel attributes the strike to the air force, while other phrasings refer more generally to the IDF. Truzman's post says the strike took place last week, while the military and Israeli outlets place it over the weekend.

What the reports do not say

The material does not state the exact date of the strike, the type of munition used, or whether anyone else was killed or wounded. It gives no casualty figures at all. It does not describe what Abu Hadaf is alleged to have done in the Kissufim area on October 7, beyond saying he entered it, and it provides no evidence for that claim beyond the military's assertion.

There is no Palestinian Islamic Jihad statement in the material, no confirmation or denial from Gaza health authorities, and no independent verification of the identification. The reports also do not specify which ceasefire arrangement the IDF says was violated, nor what steps, if any, followed the strike. Everything attributed here to the circumstances of the killing rests on a single source: the Israeli military.

איך בדקנו את זה

The killing was announced by the IDF spokesperson and reported by The Times of Israel, Ynet, N12 and analyst Joe Truzman of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies. The identification, the October 7 allegation and the ceasefire claim rest solely on the Israeli military's statement and have not been independently verified.
