Intel, the American chipmaker, is acquiring the Israeli quantum computing company Classiq in a deal valued at $2.3 billion, according to a post by Israel's Foreign Ministry on its official X account. The ministry said Classiq was founded six years ago and now has a workforce of around 150 people, and it presented the sale as further evidence of international confidence in Israeli technology.

The Israeli business daily Globes reported on the financial split of the sale. According to Globes, the company's founders, a father and son, stand to receive $200 million, while Classiq's 150 employees hold options amounting to between 15% and 20% of the company's equity. Globes said that means staff will divide as much as $450 million among them.

Who is involved

Intel is one of the best-known names in the global semiconductor industry and has long maintained a substantial presence in Israel, where it runs research, development and manufacturing operations. An acquisition of an Israeli company therefore fits a relationship between the firm and the country that stretches back decades.

Classiq is described in both reports as an Israeli quantum computing company. Quantum computing is a field that seeks to use the principles of quantum physics to process information in ways that conventional computers cannot, and it is widely seen as an area of intense competition among technology companies and governments. The reports reviewed here do not describe Classiq's specific products or technology, so this article does not characterise them further.

Why the deal is being framed as a national story

The fact that the announcement was amplified by Israel's Foreign Ministry, the government department responsible for diplomacy and the country's image abroad, reflects how Israel treats large technology acquisitions. Major sales of Israeli startups to foreign multinationals, often called "exits" in the local industry, are regularly cited by officials as a measure of the strength of the country's technology sector, which Israel promotes under the label "Startup Nation". The ministry's post called the deal a "massive vote of confidence" in Israeli innovation.

For readers outside Israel, it is worth noting that the ministry's account is promotional in tone and gives the headline figures only. The more detailed breakdown of who receives what comes from Globes, a financial newspaper that covers the Israeli business and technology scene.

Employee options and how gains are shared

The Globes figures point to a common feature of Israeli technology companies: granting employees stock options, which give staff the right to a share of the company's value if it is sold or goes public. When a company is acquired, those options can translate into significant payouts for workers, not only for founders and investors.

In Classiq's case, Globes reported that options held by staff represent 15% to 20% of the equity. With a workforce of around 150, according to both reports, that puts the employee share of the proceeds at up to $450 million, by Globes' account. The founders' combined share was put at $200 million. Neither report explains how the remainder of the $2.3 billion is distributed, for example among outside investors.

Where the reports agree and differ

The two reports are consistent on the core facts: the buyer is Intel, the company is Classiq, the price is $2.3 billion, and the workforce numbers about 150. The Foreign Ministry described the headcount as approximately 150, while Globes gave the figure as 150. The founding date of six years ago comes only from the ministry, and the details of founder and employee payouts come only from Globes.

What the reports do not say

Several questions are left open by the material available. Neither report names the father and son who founded Classiq, and neither quotes Intel or Classiq directly. The reports do not say whether the deal has been signed and completed or only announced, whether it requires regulatory approval in Israel, the United States or elsewhere, or when it is expected to close.

There is also no information on whether Classiq will continue to operate as a distinct company or be folded into Intel, whether its employees will remain in Israel, or what Intel intends to do with the company's technology. The identities of Classiq's investors and the share of the proceeds they will receive are likewise not given. Until Intel or Classiq comment publicly, those points remain unconfirmed.
