Update, 4 November, 19:07 Israel time

The IDF's account of Jamal Abu Saeed's recent activity, which was cut off in the version of its post reviewed earlier, now reads in full. The Times of Israel reported that the military says Abu Saeed was working to rebuild Hamas' capabilities, which the IDF characterised as a systematic breach of the ceasefire, alongside advancing attacks on troops and Israeli civilians. As before, no supporting evidence for these claims was published.

The Hebrew outlet News.co.il reported the security establishment's statement, referring to Omer Shem Tov as a hostage who has since been released. It said the strike was carried out from the air as part of an effort to remove threats to Israeli forces and civilians, and it described Abu Saeed as head of the operations department within Hamas military intelligence.

Neither report includes a Hamas response, details of other casualties or a reaction from Shem Tov's family.

The story as first reported

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the Israel Security Agency, known as the Shin Bet, say they killed a senior Hamas commander in an air strike on Gaza City earlier this week. In a joint statement published by the IDF spokesperson, the two bodies named the man as Jamal Abu Saeed and said the strike took place on Sunday.

According to the statement, Abu Saeed was the head of operations in Hamas' military intelligence apparatus and, during the war, was the person who held Israeli hostage Omer Shem Tov in captivity. Emanuel Fabian, military correspondent for the Times of Israel, reported the announcement, describing Abu Saeed as a top Hamas commander and quoting the joint statement on his role in holding Shem Tov.

Who the IDF says Abu Saeed was

The Israeli account presents Abu Saeed as a long-serving figure in the Islamist group's armed structure. In a post on X, the IDF said he had overseen the training of Hamas operatives outside the Gaza Strip, had commanded an anti-tank battalion and had been responsible for military specialisation in what the army called Hamas' Central Brigade. The Hebrew-language versions of the same material, carried by the Abu Ali Express channel and by N12 correspondent Nitzan Shapira, give the formation's fuller name, the Central Camps Brigade, a reference to the refugee camps of central Gaza.

The IDF also said Abu Saeed had been in charge of Hamas' relations with various countries, and the Hebrew text describes him as a significant source of knowledge for the organisation. Neither the army nor the Shin Bet named the countries involved.

The IDF post on X adds a more recent claim: that Abu Saeed had lately been advancing plots against Israeli civilians and IDF troops. The army did not publish evidence for that claim in the material reviewed, and the post as captured is cut off before it finishes describing his other recent activity.

A small difference in how his job is described

Most of the reports, including the headline of the IDF statement, the IDF post on X and the Times of Israel correspondent's account, place Abu Saeed at the head of operations within Hamas' military intelligence. The body text of the IDF's Telegram statement, however, describes him as head of the Operations Department in Hamas' military wing, without mentioning intelligence. The short alert from Ynet, a major Israeli news site, refers to him simply as head of Hamas' operations department. These may be different ways of describing the same post, but the reports do not reconcile them.

The bodies behind the announcement

The IDF is Israel's military. The Shin Bet is the country's internal security service; it works alongside the army in Gaza, largely on intelligence that helps identify and locate targets. Joint announcements of this kind, issued in the names of both organisations, are a common format when Israel says it has killed a named militant.

Gaza City is the largest urban centre in the Gaza Strip and lies in the north of the territory. Hamas, the Islamist movement that has controlled Gaza, maintains an armed wing organised into regional brigades and battalions, along with its own intelligence arm. The IDF statement places Abu Saeed within that intelligence arm.

Why the Shem Tov link is prominent

The detail that Israeli outlets led with was not Abu Saeed's rank but the claim that he personally held Omer Shem Tov. Hostages taken into Gaza have been a central issue for the Israeli public throughout the war, and the IDF and Shin Bet chose to put this connection in the headline of their statement. Commentator Amit Segal, in a brief Hebrew post, focused instead on the fact that a head of operations in Hamas military intelligence had been killed.

The reports reviewed do not describe how or where Shem Tov was held, for how long Abu Saeed was responsible for him, or how Israeli intelligence established the link.

What the reports do not say

  • There is no response from Hamas in the material, and no confirmation of the death from the group or from any source in Gaza.
  • The reports give no information on whether anyone else was killed or hurt in the Sunday strike, or what kind of building or location was hit.
  • No reaction from Omer Shem Tov or his family has been reported.
  • The IDF's claim that Abu Saeed was recently planning attacks is stated without supporting detail, and the explanation of why the strike was announced several days after it took place is not given.

איך בדקנו את זה

The killing, Abu Saeed's role and his link to Omer Shem Tov rest solely on the joint IDF and Shin Bet statement, relayed by Israeli outlets. The ceasefire violation claim is unsupported by published evidence, and there is no confirmation from Hamas or sources in Gaza.
