Update, 4 November, 19:07 Israel time
Vance made his remarks in a lengthy post on X, according to new reports, which answers the earlier gap over where he spoke. The Times of Israel reported that Vance wrote that the core issue was voters who backed the Trump/Vance ticket in 2024 switching to the Democrats in 2026, giving the Democrats what he called historic gains.
The post appears to settle part of the disagreement between earlier accounts. Per The Times of Israel, the four items (ending the war, cost of living and inflation, America First, and changing the relationship with Israel) were the top answers a pollster received when asking defecting voters what would bring them back, and Vance said those answers covered nearly all responses. That matches the N12 framing more closely than a list of causes.
The Hebrew-language channel Abu Ali Express, quoting the post, said Vance described the pollster as one of the most brilliant people he knows, who told him the day before the vote that Republicans would trail by 13 points on the generic ballot. Vance wrote that he was pessimistic going into Tuesday but still surprised by that forecast.
News.co.il described the remarks as setting off a political storm and heated debate among Republicans. The pollster has not been named in the reports.
The story as first reported
US Vice President JD Vance said on Wednesday that the Republican Party lost the midterm elections in part because of the war with Iran, and that the party's relationship with Israel was also a factor in voters turning away. Haaretz reported that Vance pointed to the Iran war as the reason for the loss and said President Donald Trump had acknowledged this himself after exit polls came out on Tuesday.

Several Israeli outlets gave a fuller version of his remarks. According to a post by Israeli journalist Amit Segal, Vance listed four causes for the defeat: the war in Iran, the cost of living, a failure to put America first, and the party's relations with Israel. The Israeli broadcaster N12 reported that Vance cited polling to argue that four steps would bring voters back: ending the war, concentrating on the cost of living and inflation, making America First the priority, and changing the relationship with Israel.
Who JD Vance is and why his words carry weight
Vance is the vice president, serving as Trump's deputy, and is one of the most senior figures in the Republican Party. A public assessment from him of why the party lost is likely to be read as more than a personal opinion, particularly when he attributes part of the same view to the president. The Hebrew-language reports refer to him repeatedly as Trump's deputy, a framing that signals to Israeli readers how close he stands to the White House.
The midterm elections are the US national elections held in the middle of a president's term, when voters choose members of Congress. They are widely treated as a verdict on the sitting administration. Vance's remarks came the day after the vote, as the party began explaining the outcome.
How the reports frame the Israel element
The Israeli coverage put the Israel point at the front. Ynet, the website of the Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper, headlined its report on Vance blaming Israel as well for the loss, and summarised his message as saying that voters would return if the party changed its relationship with Israel. An earlier Ynet news alert described relations with Israel as one of the reasons voters had abandoned the party.

N12 reported, in a version of its alert that it later edited, that Vance said the voters who left the Republicans want the party to change its relationship with Israel. Amit Segal's post characterised the remarks as Trump's deputy blaming Israel for the Republican defeat.
Haaretz, writing in English, led instead with the Iran war and with Vance's claim that Trump had said so himself. Its published text does not mention Israel among the reasons, though its full article sits behind a paywall and the visible portion is short.
What America First means here
America First is the slogan associated with Trump's political movement. It stands for prioritising domestic interests over foreign commitments. In Vance's list, as reported by N12 and Amit Segal, it appears alongside ending the war and changing ties with Israel, which places all three in the same frame: a call to turn attention away from overseas involvement and toward issues at home, such as prices and inflation.
Where the accounts differ
The reports do not fully agree on what Vance said. Haaretz presents the Iran war as the reason for the loss. Amit Segal's post presents four reasons for the defeat, with Israel as one of them. N12 describes the four items not as causes of the loss but as measures that, according to polls Vance cited, would win voters back. Ynet frames the Israel point as a condition for voters returning. These versions may reflect different parts of the same remarks, but the reports as published do not settle that.
The claim that Trump himself accepted the Iran war explanation appears only in the Haaretz report, and it rests on Vance's account of what the president said.
What the reports do not say
None of the reports says where or in what setting Vance spoke, and none quotes him at length in English. None identifies the polls he relied on or what they measured. No response from Trump, from other Republican leaders or from the Israeli government has been reported, and the reports do not explain what a change in the relationship with Israel would involve.

איך בדקנו את זה
The Times of Israel and Abu Ali Express both quote Vance's X post directly, confirming the four items and the polling basis. The pollster is unnamed, and the claim that Trump accepted the Iran war explanation still rests only on Haaretz's report of Vance's account.
