Israel's military and its internal security service said on Tuesday evening that they had killed Nael Abu Obeid, described as the commander of Hamas's Rafah Brigade and the head of the group's military wing operations array, in a strike in the southern Gaza Strip. In a joint announcement by the Israel Defense Forces and the Israel Security Agency, the two bodies said Abu Obeid had taken up the brigade command after the killing of his predecessor and had previously filled a series of roles in the same brigade, including deputy commander.

The first notice came earlier in the evening, when the IDF said only that it had struck a senior Hamas figure in southern Gaza and that further details would follow. Times of Israel military correspondent Emanuel Fabian reported that a senior security official told journalists it appeared the strike on the Rafah Brigade commander had succeeded, before the formal confirmation was issued roughly an hour later.

What the Israeli leadership said

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz issued a joint statement while the strike's outcome was still being assessed. The statement, published by the Israeli government press office, said the military had struck the Rafah Brigade commander following the killing earlier in the week of the commander of the Khan Yunis Brigade and other senior members of the organisation. "No terrorist is immune, and Hamas will not be in Gaza," the two said, adding that they stood behind the IDF and the ISA.

The ISA, commonly known in Israel by its Hebrew acronym Shin Bet, is the domestic intelligence agency. It works alongside the military in identifying and tracking targets in Gaza, which is why announcements of this kind are typically issued jointly rather than by the army alone.

Who Israel says Abu Obeid was

In its account on X, the IDF called Abu Obeid a key figure in Hamas's senior leadership, saying he managed the brigade's fighters, directed attacks on Israeli civilians and soldiers, and worked to rebuild the brigade's force. Joe Truzman of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, a research organisation that tracks armed groups, reported that the Israeli statement also listed earlier commands over the Tel al-Sultan and Yibna battalions, and that Israel said he was involved in restoring the brigade's capabilities after losses during the war. Truzman separately said he had located a photograph of Abu Obeid with senior Hamas figure Ayman Nofal at a Hamas military exercise held between 2020 and 2023.

Gazan media identified the man killed as Nael Abu Obeid, also known by the nom de guerre Abu Atiya, according to Fabian. The Telegram channel Abu Ali Express, which monitors Palestinian and Arabic-language media, reported that members of Abu Obeid's family had also confirmed his death.

The Rafah Brigade and its previous commander

Rafah is the southernmost city in the Gaza Strip, on the border with Egypt. Hamas's military wing is organised territorially into regional brigades, with the Rafah Brigade responsible for that sector and further divided into battalions named for local areas, among them Tel al-Sultan and Yibna.

Israeli accounts of the predecessor differ slightly in transliteration. The IDF and ISA statement named him Mohammad Sabaneh; Fabian rendered the name Muhammad Shabana and dated the killing to May 13, 2025. Ynet reported that the previous brigade commander had been killed alongside Mohammad Sinwar, and that Abu Obeid was killed by an unmanned aerial vehicle in the joint IDF and Shin Bet operation.

How the announcement unfolded

The sequence was unusually compressed. The IDF's initial notice gave no name. Katz then said the Rafah Brigade commander had been killed, before the military and the Shin Bet issued their joint confirmation with the name attached. Ynet noted that Netanyahu and Katz had put out their statement before the results of the strike were finally clear, a point the Hebrew report raised directly.

What the reports do not say

None of the material specifies the exact location within southern Gaza where the strike took place, the time of the strike itself as distinct from the announcements, or whether anyone else was killed or wounded. There is no Hamas statement in the reports confirming or denying the death of Abu Obeid, beyond the family confirmation relayed by Abu Ali Express and reports in Gazan media. The Khan Yunis Brigade commander referred to by Netanyahu and Katz is not named in these reports. The reports also give no independent verification of the Israeli description of Abu Obeid's roles, which rests on the military's own account.
