Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held a Rosh Hashanah toast at the Kirya in Tel Aviv with Defense Minister Israel Katz, IDF Chief of the General Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir and members of the General Staff Forum, according to a statement issued by the Israeli government. The published remarks were released with a photograph credited to Haim Zach of the Government Press Office.

In the remarks distributed by the Prime Minister's Office, Netanyahu described the Iranian government as weaker than ever and said that removing the threat it poses, which he defined as toppling the regime, is the central mission still ahead. "I say to our enemies, do not mess with us," he said, adding that Israel has "the power, the determination, and the internal unity to overcome you."

What the Kirya is

The Kirya is the compound in central Tel Aviv that houses the headquarters of the Israel Defense Forces and the Ministry of Defense. It is the site where the General Staff Forum, the senior command body of the IDF made up of the chief of staff and the heads of the military's main branches and directorates, convenes. Holiday toasts with the political leadership are a recurring feature of the Israeli institutional calendar, and the government statement presents this gathering as one of them rather than as an operational meeting.

Rosh Hashanah and the timing

Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish new year, marked with synagogue services, the sounding of the shofar and festive meals, and it opens the period of introspection that ends with Yom Kippur. In Israel it is a national holiday, and public bodies, military units and companies commonly hold a pre-holiday toast, in Hebrew a kos shel brachah style gathering at which leaders deliver a summing up of the year and wishes for the one ahead. Netanyahu closed his remarks by wishing the people of Israel power, determination and internal unity in the coming year.

The terms Netanyahu used

The prime minister referred to achievements accumulated over three years of what he called the War of Redemption, the Hebrew-language name used by parts of the Israeli leadership for the war that has run since the Hamas attack on southern Israel. He also invoked two named military campaigns, Operation Roaring Lion and Operation Rising Lion, saying that results from both, and from the period since, amount to historic achievements that secure Israel's continued existence. The government statement does not describe those operations, give their dates or list what they involved, and readers outside Israel should note that the release assumes familiarity with them.

The claim about Iran

Netanyahu's framing was that Israel had faced a threat of annihilation from a government seeking nuclear weapons, and that this threat has been pushed back along with others. He said the Iranian authorities are faltering, that they are attacking others but not Israel, and that they know "our power, the force of our arm, and our determination." He described the toppling of the regime as close and within reach, saying it is "not impossible."

He credited the capability of Israeli soldiers, pilots, female pilots and navigators, and what he called the home front array. The statement offers no supporting detail, no assessment from the military participants present and no indication of whether the assembled General Staff Forum shares the prime minister's characterisation. It is a political speech reproduced by the government, not an intelligence evaluation.

Why a single-source account matters here

This report rests on one document: a release published by the Israeli government presenting the prime minister's own words. Statements of this kind are primary material for what a leader said, and they are reliable on that point, but they are not independent reporting on the situation the leader is describing. Nothing in the material establishes the state of Iranian capabilities, the status of any Israeli operation, or how the remarks were received.

What the material does not say

The release gives no indication of how long the gathering lasted, who else attended beyond those named, or whether Katz and Zamir spoke. It does not say whether the toast was open to the press or closed, and it does not attach any operational decision to the event. There is no account of the current state of hostilities, no casualty figures, no reference to negotiations, and no response from Iranian officials or from any other government. Nor does the statement clarify the relationship between the two named operations, the boundaries between them, or what stage the war Netanyahu described is understood by the military to be at. Those questions remain open on the basis of what has been published.
