Netanyahu pushed for Iran strike over IDF chief's objection, reports say
Reports say the prime minister sought a swift strike on Iran that the military chief opposed, as Defense Minister Katz denies any plan to fire Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sought a fresh military strike on Iran and met resistance from the head of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), according to several Israeli outlets citing American and Israeli sources. Israel Hayom, relaying a CNN report, said two American officials and an Israeli security source described Netanyahu as eager for renewed strikes, while US officials asked him to hold off until the Trump administration was prepared to carry out joint operations.
A later Israel Hayom report said IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir opposed the proposed swift operation and had not been told about the plan beforehand, and that Mossad Director Roman Gofman backed it, citing a source familiar with the discussions. By evening, reports that Netanyahu might remove Zamir if he wins the coming election had drawn denials from the Prime Minister's Office and from Defense Minister Israel Katz.

Who the officials are
The IDF chief of staff is Israel's most senior military officer, answering to the defense minister and the elected government. The Mossad is Israel's foreign intelligence agency, which reports directly to the prime minister. Israel Katz, a member of Netanyahu's Likud party, holds the defense portfolio. The reported split places the prime minister and the Mossad chief on one side of the proposal and the military chief on the other.
The Times of Israel reported that Gofman was said to be at odds with his own aides over his support for the plan, which it described as a proposal to strike Iran before the election.
The election backdrop
The reports surfaced on the eve of a national vote. In an analysis piece, Hebrew news site Ynet wrote that if Netanyahu and Katz remain in power, the expectation is that they would move to end Zamir's term, and that Zamir might not receive a fourth year in the post. The Times of Israel also reported that Netanyahu was said to be considering dismissing the army chief if reelected, and that the Prime Minister's Office rejected these accounts as "fake".

Ynet's analysis described a second dispute unrelated to Iran. According to the outlet, Zamir opposed continuing a military operation in Hebron, a city in the West Bank, judging that it had run its course, but the political leadership ordered it resumed, and the argument became heated.
Katz's denial
In a statement carried by News.co.il, Katz called the reports of a plan to fire Zamir "a fabrication and a complete lie". He grouped them with other security-related claims he said had circulated over the previous day with the aim of damaging Likud ahead of the vote. Katz said he had himself recommended Zamir for the job, that the two work together on Israel's security, and that he intends to keep doing so.

How the accounts differ
The reports do not tell a single story. Israel Hayom's headline on the CNN account links American restraint to a warning from the IDF chief, and its later report frames Zamir as opposed to the operation and excluded from early planning. Ynet's analysis, by contrast, characterised the disagreement over Iran as mainly a question of timing. The government has denied the reports about Zamir's future, though the available statements do not address the claims about the Iran proposal itself.
What the reports do not say
None of the material identifies what targets in Iran were under discussion, when the proposed operation would have taken place, or whether it was shelved, postponed or remains under consideration. The sources for the central claims are unnamed: American officials and an Israeli security source via CNN, and a source familiar with the discussions via Israel Hayom. Zamir has not been quoted in any of the reports, and there is no public comment from Gofman or from the US administration. The reports also do not explain the nature of the warning attributed to the IDF chief, nor do they say whether the Prime Minister's Office denial extends beyond the reports about dismissing him.
