Update, 10 September, 04:08 Israel time

Senior figures in the US administration have privately told President Donald Trump that the confrontation with Iran may not end on the timeline he described in public. The Times of Israel, citing a Wall Street Journal report based on US officials, said Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other officials warned Trump that Iran could keep holding out against American economic and military pressure, with the conflict potentially continuing past the presidential inauguration in January 2029.

In response to the newspaper, a White House spokesperson said Trump had destroyed Iran's military capabilities and was crippling its economy through a naval blockade and sanctions, adding that only the president knows what he will do and when.

The Hebrew-language outlets carried the same account. N12's foreign desk reported the Wall Street Journal item, naming Vance and Rubio among those who cautioned that the war could last until the end of Trump's term. Ynet's alert channel reported the warning in similar terms, without naming the officials.

The warning described in these reports stands against the president's own public assessment that the fighting would stop once the American vote is behind him. None of the new reports gives a date for the private discussions, describes any military plan attached to them, or carries an Iranian reaction.

The story as first reported

US President Donald Trump said the war with Iran would end immediately after the American midterm elections, telling reporters that the leadership in Tehran was trying to hold on until the vote in the hope of damaging Republicans at the ballot box. Israel Hayom reported that he made the remarks at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, before leaving for a Republican Party event.

Ynet reported the comments against the background of assessments that the president could resume fighting once the American vote is behind him, and quoted him saying that the Iranians cannot hold out and are desperate to influence the election. The Jerusalem Post carried the same statement, reporting that Trump claimed Tehran was trying to sway the midterms and that he expected the war to end after the election.

What the midterm elections are

American midterm elections fall between presidential votes and decide control of Congress, the legislative branch that approves budgets and can constrain a president. Ynet reported that the vote is set for November 3 and framed Trump's remarks as tied to the struggle over control of Congress. A president whose party loses either chamber typically faces a harder second half of a term, which is the political stake Trump was pointing to when he accused Iran of trying to affect the outcome.

Joint Base Andrews, and why leaders speak there

Joint Base Andrews is a military installation in Maryland, outside Washington, and is the departure point for Air Force One, the aircraft that carries the US president. Short, unscripted exchanges with reporters on the tarmac there are a routine format in American political coverage, and they are where presidents often make news without a prepared text. Israel Hayom placed Trump's Iran comments in exactly that setting, before a flight to a Republican Party engagement.

The nuclear file moves to the Security Council

Alongside the president's comments, Ynet reported a decision at the United Nations nuclear agency referring Iran to the UN Security Council over nuclear violations, describing the move as historic. The agency in question, the International Atomic Energy Agency, is the UN body based in Vienna that inspects nuclear programmes and reports on whether states are meeting their obligations. Its board can refer a country to the Security Council, which is the only UN organ able to impose binding sanctions.

Ynet also reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin and China would provide a protective umbrella for Iran. Both Russia and China hold permanent seats on the Security Council, and each can veto a resolution there. In practice that means a referral does not automatically translate into Security Council action, which is the tension the report describes.

What the phrasing does and does not commit to

The reports present a prediction rather than a plan. Trump said the war would end after the election and attributed Iranian conduct to a desire to hold on until the vote, but the material does not include a description of terms, a ceasefire mechanism, negotiations, or any step either side would have to take for the fighting to stop. Ynet frames the remarks in the context of assessments that the president might renew the fighting after the American election, which points in the opposite direction from an imminent end, and the reports do not reconcile those two things.

There is also a difference of emphasis worth noting. Israel Hayom characterised Trump as saying Tehran hoped to weaken Republicans by holding out. The Jerusalem Post headline framed the same remarks as a claim that Tehran was trying to influence the midterms. Ynet reported him saying the Iranians are desperate to influence the election. These are compatible readings of one set of comments, but the sources do not use identical language, and no full transcript appears in the material.

What the reports do not say

The material does not say when the war began, what stage it is at, what military operations are under way, or what either side has said about casualties. It contains no Iranian response to Trump's statement, and no comment from Israeli officials. It does not describe the specific nuclear violations behind the IAEA referral, the vote count on that decision, or what the Security Council is expected to do next. Ynet's report that Russia and China would shield Iran is attributed to that outlet alone in this material and is not corroborated by the other reports. Nor do the reports quote Trump at length: the phrase attributed to him about the Iranians being unable to hold out appears in Ynet's account, and the surrounding exchange with reporters is not reproduced. Readers should treat the timing he described as his own assessment rather than an announced policy.
