Observation soldiers spotted Jordan border gun smugglers, Ynet says

New detail has emerged on how the smuggling run was detected. Ynet reported that female observation soldiers serving with the IDF's Combat Intelligence Collection Battalion 909 picked out the two men on their monitors, tracked their movement and alerted the forces that then set the ambushes in which they were arrested. One of the soldiers was quoted by Ynet saying that without the observation post the incident would only have been discovered after the fact, and that complacency is the enemy.

Ynet also gave an account of the route taken, reporting that the two residents of Jericho crossed from Israeli-controlled territory into Jordan and were returning when they were stopped, carrying more than 30 pistols and two M-16 rifles. Earlier statements had not described the direction of travel.

Separately, Joe Truzman of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies wrote that the IDF account placed the interception on the eastern border and put the haul at more than 30 pistols and two M16 rifles, noting that the identification of the frontier as the Jordanian one was his own inference rather than a detail specified in the military's statement.

No Israeli body has yet reconciled the differing weapons counts issued by the army and the police, and neither new account names the suspects or says whether charges have been brought.

The story as first reported

Israeli security forces say they broke up an attempt to smuggle firearms across the country's eastern frontier with Jordan overnight, arresting two suspects and seizing a cache of handguns and rifles. The Israel Defense Forces spokesperson said that military surveillance first picked up signs of activity consistent with preparations for a smuggling run in the eastern border area on Thursday night, and that forces were directed to the scene on the basis of those findings.

According to the account issued by the IDF, troops from the Jordan Valley and Foothills Brigade operated together with officers of the Israel Police Jordan Border Unit in the Judea and Samaria District and Border Police units in the same area. The Times of Israel reported that the joint force set ambushes along the border before dawn and detained two Palestinian men in their 50s from the Jericho area, who were found carrying 34 handguns and two M-16 assault rifles.

The figures given by different bodies do not match exactly

The reports do not agree on a single count of the weapons recovered. The IDF spokesperson's statement referred to 35 weapons seized. The Times of Israel, citing the police statement, listed 34 handguns and two M-16 rifles. Hebrew-language outlets carrying the police spokesperson's announcement described the foiled shipment as roughly 40 weapons: N12 reported that a large smuggling attempt of about 40 firearms had been thwarted, and News.co.il published the police text describing dozens of items of weaponry blocked in the Jordan Valley area. None of the statements published so far explains the gap between the counts, and it is not clear whether the differing numbers reflect separate tallies of handguns, rifles and other equipment, or an early estimate later refined.

Who was involved

The units named in the statements are not household names outside Israel. The Jordan Valley and Foothills Brigade is a regional IDF formation responsible for the stretch of territory running along the Jordan River and the valley floor below it. The Jordan Border Unit sits within the Israel Police's Judea and Samaria District, the police command covering the West Bank, and is tasked specifically with smuggling and crime along that boundary. Border Police, known in Hebrew as Magav, is a gendarmerie-style branch of the Israel Police that operates in the West Bank alongside army units. Israeli official statements routinely use "Judea and Samaria", the biblical Hebrew names for the territory that most international reporting calls the West Bank.

Jericho, the city the two detained men are said to come from, lies in the Jordan Valley in the eastern West Bank, a short distance from the river and the border crossings into Jordan. It is administered by the Palestinian Authority.

Why the eastern border keeps producing these cases

The Times of Israel described weapons smuggling as a persistent problem for Israel along its long and porous eastern boundary with Jordan. The frontier runs for hundreds of kilometres through sparsely populated desert and valley terrain, and Israeli forces have for years treated it as a principal route for firearms entering the West Bank and, from there, the wider Israeli criminal market. Handguns and assault rifles moved this way turn up both in organised crime and in attacks, which is why interceptions are announced jointly by the army and the police rather than by one of them alone.

The police statement published by News.co.il framed the operation as part of an intensified round of activity now under way as forces prepare for the Jewish holiday period, alongside what it called the continuing effort against terrorism and against smuggling attempts on the eastern border, material that it said could reach terror operatives or be used for criminal and security-related activity. The Hebrew autumn festival season, which includes Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, traditionally sees Israeli security services raise deployment levels.

What the statements leave open

Several basic elements of the incident have not been addressed publicly. The reports do not say how the weapons were carried across, whether by foot, vehicle or drone, and they do not identify who sent the shipment or who was meant to receive it. No information has been released on the origin of the firearms or their intended destination beyond the general reference to the West Bank.

The two men are described only as suspects or wanted individuals, with no names, and N12 reported that they were transferred for further questioning. Whether charges have been filed is not stated. No injuries or exchanges of fire are mentioned in any of the accounts. There is also no indication in the material of any comment from Jordanian authorities or from the Palestinian Authority, and the exact location of the interception along the border has not been specified beyond the Jordan Valley area.
