The Israeli court system announced the death of Judge Benny Sagi, president of the Beersheba District Court, in a statement issued by the judiciary. It called him a talented and promising judge and a leader, admired by those who knew him, who had reached professional success young and had served on the bench for about twenty years.

Sagi had led the Beersheba District Court for the previous year and a half, having come to it from the Tel Aviv District Court, a role the statement said he filled with professionalism and both professional and personal leadership. It described him as a devoted family man, a husband and father, a keen sports fan and a close friend to colleagues. The President of the Supreme Court, the Director of the Courts and all the judges and staff of the court system shared in the family’s sorrow, the statement said, adding that an announcement about the funeral would follow.

What a district court president does

Israel’s civil courts run in three tiers. About 30 magistrates’ courts handle lesser criminal matters and smaller civil claims. Six district courts, one for each district of the country, try serious criminal cases and larger civil disputes, hear appeals from the magistrates’ courts and decide administrative petitions; most cases go before a single judge, with three-judge panels for grave felonies and appeals. The Supreme Court in Jerusalem sits at the top, both as the final appellate court and, as the High Court of Justice, as a first-instance forum for challenges to state action, according to a description of the system. The president of a district court both hears cases and runs the bench, including deciding when a case merits a panel of three, which means the Beersheba presidency covers the courts of the whole of southern Israel.

How the system responded

The reaction went well beyond the judiciary’s own statement. President Isaac Herzog called Sagi a brilliant and sharp jurist who combined great professional knowledge with extraordinary honesty and said the judicial system had lost one of its finest, and Justice Minister Yariv Levin described him as an exceptional judge, liked and respected by lawyers and litigants alike, the Times of Israel reported on 4 January 2026. Supreme Court President Isaac Amit said the judiciary had lost a friend and a leader, a judge who was extraordinarily talented, the same outlet reported.

What the announcement did not say

The judiciary’s statement did not say how Sagi died, did not give his age, and did not name a successor or an acting president for the Beersheba court. The Times of Israel reported on 4 January 2026 that he was killed when a vehicle driving off-road came onto Route 6 and struck the motorcycle he was riding, and that medics pronounced him dead at the scene. The statement also gave no funeral time, saying only that one would be announced later, and said nothing about the cases pending before him.
