Israel's Defense Minister, Israel Katz, has rejected reports of a serious dispute over Iran between the country's elected leadership and the military's top commander, Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir. In a statement, Katz said there had never been any Israeli intention to launch an attack on Iran ahead of the coming Israeli election, according to Emanuel Fabian, military correspondent for The Times of Israel.
Katz described the reports of disagreement as "completely baseless and false," Fabian reported. His denial followed a report the previous evening on Channel 12 news describing a clash between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Zamir, which Fabian said centred on an instruction given to the military. The excerpts of Fabian's posts available to us cut off before saying what that instruction was. The Times of Israel's live blog summarised Katz as calling the reports of a clash between the prime minister and the army chief baseless and saying there was no intention to attack Iran before the vote.

What Katz said
The fuller Hebrew text of the statement was circulated by News.co.il and by the commentator Amit Segal. In it, Katz said that since he became defense minister, coordination on Iran among himself, the prime minister and the military had been complete, and he credited that cooperation with what he called historic and unprecedented gains for Israel's security. He said Israel's security was the only consideration guiding them and would remain so.
Katz stated categorically that Israel had not intended to initiate a strike on Iran before the election. He added that Israel had made clear it would respond with great force if Iran attacked it, and he again called all reports on the matter false.
He also turned on the political opposition. According to the text posted by Segal, Katz said opposition figures were using the reports to attack the prime minister and himself and to cast doubt on their motives, at a time when, for reasons he said were understandable, the government could not discuss details of the Iran file. He called that conduct shameful and irresponsible and said, "We will overcome this too." Ynet's news alert service led with the line that Israel had no intention of initiating an attack on Iran before the election.

Who the officials are
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) is the country's military. Its Chief of Staff is the most senior officer in uniform and answers to the defense minister and the government. Eyal Zamir holds that post with the rank of lieutenant general, the highest in the IDF. Israel Katz is the cabinet minister responsible for the defense establishment, and Benjamin Netanyahu heads the government as prime minister.
Katz's Hebrew statement refers to the "political echelon," a common Israeli phrase for the elected civilian leadership, chiefly the prime minister and senior ministers, as distinct from the professional military command. Reports of friction between the two levels draw attention in Israel because decisions on major military action are formally taken by the government, while the military is expected to give its professional assessment and carry out the decisions.
Why the timing matters
Katz linked his denial explicitly to the Israeli election, which the reports describe as upcoming but for which they give no date. The suggestion he was rejecting was that a strike on Iran might have been considered in the period before Israelis vote. Because a decision of that kind could carry political as well as security consequences, the claim of a dispute between the government and the army chief quickly became a matter of political argument, which is the context for Katz's remarks about the opposition.
Katz's statement also restated a familiar Israeli position: that Israel would answer any Iranian attack forcefully. He did not describe any specific threat.
What the reports do not say
Several points remain unclear from the material available:
- The reports seen here do not set out what instruction Channel 12 said was at the heart of the dispute between Netanyahu and Zamir.
- There is no response from Zamir or from the IDF itself in any of the reports.
- None of the reports include a separate statement from Netanyahu or his office.
- Katz does not name the opposition figures he accused of exploiting the reports, and the reports do not quote any of them.
- The date of the election is not given.
- Katz said the government could not discuss details of the Iran issue, so his statement does not address the substance of what Channel 12 reported beyond denying it.
