Israeli soldiers detained five Palestinians in the northern West Bank town of Qabatiya early on Friday, and the military says the group was preparing an attack on Israeli civilians and security personnel. According to the IDF spokesperson, the operation was described as a special counterterrorism activity carried out on the basis of intelligence from the Israel Security Agency.
The Times of Israel reported that commandos of the Duvdevan unit entered Qabatiya at dawn and detained the five men less than ten minutes after reaching the locations where they were believed to be. Searches of the suspects' homes turned up an assault rifle, ammunition and additional military equipment that the military says had been concealed, and the detainees were handed over to the security services for questioning.

Where Qabatiya is
Qabatiya is a Palestinian town in the northern West Bank, south of Jenin. Israeli media framed the location in different ways: Ynet's alert service described the arrests as taking place in the Jenin area, while the Hebrew outlet News.co.il placed the operation in Samaria, the biblical name Israel uses for the northern West Bank. The Israeli military itself refers to the territory as Judea and Samaria. All of the reports name the same town.
What Duvdevan is
Duvdevan, Hebrew for "cherry", is an Israeli army commando unit that operates in the West Bank and is known for undercover work in Palestinian towns and cities. The unit falls under Israel's special operations structure and is typically deployed for arrest raids rather than open combat. The Telegram channel Abu Ali Express, which monitors Arabic-language and Israeli security material, reported the military statement as saying the raid took place in the area of responsibility of the Menashe Brigade, the regional Israeli army formation covering the northern West Bank around Jenin.
The Shin Bet's role
The Israel Security Agency, known in Hebrew as the Shin Bet or Shabak, is Israel's internal security service. It handles counterintelligence and counterterrorism inside Israel and in the West Bank, and it runs the intelligence work that usually precedes army arrest raids of this kind. In the military's account, the Shin Bet supplied the intelligence identifying the cell, and the detainees were transferred to security service interrogation after their arrest. Suspects taken in such operations are typically questioned before any decision on charges or administrative detention is made public.
What was found
The Israeli military said the searches produced an M16 assault rifle along with ammunition and other combat equipment. The Jerusalem Post published an image credited to the IDF Spokesperson's Unit showing equipment it said was recovered from the homes of the suspects. The photograph and the details of the seizure come from the military; no independent inspection of the material has been reported.
Language and framing
The Israeli military and the Hebrew-language outlets describe the five as "terrorists" and the cell as one that planned an attack. The Times of Israel referred to them as Palestinians whom the military says were planning an attack, attributing the characterisation rather than adopting it. News.co.il went further, telling readers that Israeli forces had thwarted a serious attack at the last moment. That is the outlet's framing; the military statement itself does not describe a timeline for the alleged plot.
Raids in the Jenin area
Arrest operations in and around Jenin and Qabatiya are a recurring feature of Israeli military activity in the northern West Bank, and the army periodically announces the detention of cells it says were preparing attacks. In this instance the military presented the operation as intelligence led and short in duration, and reported no injuries on either side.
What the reports do not say
None of the accounts name the five detainees, give their ages, or say whether they are affiliated with any armed faction. There is no information on what kind of attack was allegedly planned, where it was to take place, or how advanced the preparations were said to be. The reports do not say whether anyone was hurt during the raid, whether there was resistance, or where the detainees are being held. No Palestinian account of the raid appears in the material, and no comment from the detainees, their families or their lawyers has been reported. Everything about the alleged plot rests on statements from the Israeli military and the Israel Security Agency, and has not been independently confirmed.
