Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a statement of condolence on 25 September 2026 for two Israeli reserve soldiers, Master Sergeant (Res.) Nadav Kali and Master Sergeant (Res.) Ofek Moalem. According to the statement published by the Israeli government, the two men fell in what Netanyahu described as a "tragic incident in Gaza" on the day before the statement was released.
Netanyahu said that he and his wife grieve together with the citizens of Israel, called the two men brave reservists who had defended the country's security, and offered their families his condolences. He added that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), the country's military, is investigating the incident. In the government's release, he said all necessary lessons "must be learned and implemented" to protect the safety of soldiers.

What the statement says, and what it does not
The statement is short and follows the form Israeli prime ministers commonly use when soldiers die in service. It names the two men, gives their rank, describes where they fell in general terms and expresses sympathy with their families. It does not describe the incident itself. It uses the word "tragic" and refers to an investigation, but it gives no account of how the two soldiers died, which unit they served in or where in Gaza the incident took place.
The statement was issued as a media statement under the heading of the 37th Government, the name used for the current Israeli cabinet. It is the only source available to us for this report.
Who reservists are
The abbreviation "Res." after a rank indicates that the soldier serves in the reserves rather than in compulsory or career service. Most Israeli Jewish men and many women are conscripted at the age of eighteen, and after completing their regular service many are assigned to reserve units. Reservists continue to live civilian lives, working and studying, and are called up for training and for operational duty when the military needs them. In periods of sustained fighting, reservists form a large share of the forces deployed, and their deaths are often felt closely in the communities and workplaces they come from.
Master sergeant is a non-commissioned rank. In the IDF, soldiers of this rank are typically experienced and often hold responsibility within their units, though the statement gives no detail about the roles Kali and Moalem held.
The phrase "of blessed memory"
Netanyahu referred to the two men as "of blessed memory." The expression is an English rendering of a traditional Hebrew formula, used after the name of someone who has died. It appears routinely in Israeli official statements, in speech and in writing about the dead, and in this context signals that the two soldiers have died rather than been wounded.
How the IDF examines incidents
The statement says the IDF is investigating. When soldiers are killed in circumstances that are not immediately clear, or when a death may have resulted from an accident, an operational error or friendly fire, the military usually opens an internal inquiry. Findings are sometimes shared with the families first and made public later, and in some cases they lead to changes in procedure. Netanyahu's reference to lessons that must be implemented for the safety of soldiers suggests the government regards the circumstances as requiring examination, but the statement does not say what the inquiry is looking at.
What the reports do not say
Only one account of this event is available, and it is the prime minister's statement, not a military announcement or a news report. Several basic facts are therefore missing:
- How Kali and Moalem died, and what kind of incident took place.
- Where in Gaza the incident happened.
- Which unit the two soldiers belonged to, and their ages or hometowns.
- Whether any other soldiers were hurt in the same incident.
- When the IDF inquiry is expected to report, and whether its findings will be published.
The word "tragic" and the emphasis on lessons for soldiers' safety may point to something other than a combat death, but the statement does not say so, and we are not drawing that conclusion. Any further details, including funeral arrangements, would need to come from the IDF or from the families.
