Israeli police arrested 11 people after disturbances at a gathering in the central city of Lod, according to a police statement carried by Ynet. Police described those detained as having breached public order during the gathering.

News.co.il reported that the crowd numbered several dozen, that some participants began causing disorder and ignored officers' instructions, and that officers from the Lod police station, together with Border Police personnel, moved in and detained the suspects. Police also said that no stabbing had occurred, rejecting claims that had circulated about the incident.

A march into an Arab neighbourhood

The Times of Israel reported that the brawl followed what far-right activists called a "sovereignty march" through an Arab part of the city. In Israeli politics, "sovereignty" is a term used on the right, usually in connection with calls to extend Israeli law to territory beyond the country's recognised borders. None of the reports explains what message the marchers in Lod were promoting or who organised the event.

The Times of Israel cited a statement from Lod Mayor Yair Revivo, who said that extremists had arrived from outside the city to inflame tensions. According to the mayor, they were joined by some 20 boys and teenagers from a yeshiva high school in the city. A yeshiva high school is a religious Jewish secondary school that combines Torah study with a general curriculum.

Revivo said that after police broke up the group, the local boys shouted insulting slogans outside homes belonging to Arab residents. That, in his account, led to a violent confrontation that left people hurt and saw arrests among both Jews and Arabs. "I'm seething with rage," the mayor said, adding that the outside group had stirred things up and then left local residents to cope with what followed.

Who was arrested

The two Hebrew-language reports and the English one agree on the total of 11 arrests and that a woman was among those detained. They differ slightly on the number of young people held. News.co.il said those arrested included minors, in the plural, while The Times of Israel said a minor was among them. Police have not been reported as releasing names, ages or the specific offences suspected.

Who the Border Police are

The Border Police, known in Hebrew by the abbreviation Magav, are a gendarmerie arm of the Israel Police. Despite the name, they are deployed widely inside Israel and are frequently called in to support local stations during riots and public order incidents. In this case they worked alongside officers from Lod's own station.

Why Lod is sensitive

Lod is one of Israel's mixed cities, where Jewish and Arab citizens live side by side, often in neighbourhoods that are largely one or the other. It sits in central Israel, close to the country's main international airport.

The city became a focal point of the unrest of May 2021, when violence between Jewish and Arab residents broke out in several mixed cities during a period of fighting between Israel and armed groups in Gaza. Revivo referred directly to that period in his statement, saying that since then the city had succeeded in keeping relative calm. He said he had no intention of allowing anyone to drag Lod back to those days, and called on Jewish and Arab community leaders to speak to young people.

The mayor's remarks reflect a recurring concern among officials in mixed cities: that provocations by groups from elsewhere can quickly escalate into street clashes between neighbours who otherwise share schools, markets and public spaces.

The stabbing claim

Both News.co.il and The Times of Israel reported that police denied a stabbing had taken place. Neither report says where the claim originated or how widely it spread before police addressed it.

What the reports do not say

The reports do not give the number of people injured or the severity of their injuries, and they do not say whether those arrested include both Jewish and Arab suspects, beyond the mayor's statement that arrests were made on both sides. No response has been reported from the march organisers, from the yeshiva high school named by the mayor, or from Arab community leaders in Lod. It is also not yet known whether any of the 11 will face charges.

איך בדקנו את זה

The 11 arrests were reported by Ynet, News.co.il and The Times of Israel, citing police; the denial of a stabbing appears in two reports. The 'sovereignty march' account and the mayor's statement come only from The Times of Israel, and sources differ on whether one minor or several were arrested.
