Five people died on November 8, 2026 when a bank of sand gave way onto tents sheltering displaced people near Deir al-Balah, in the middle of the Gaza Strip, according to Gaza's Civil Defense agency, which operates under Hamas. The Times of Israel reported the agency's updated toll, adding that reports from inside Gaza put at least two children among the dead and that the search for people still missing had not ended.

The first account was smaller. In an earlier report, The Times of Israel cited the Civil Defense agency as saying a woman had died and at least five other people had been hurt. Video from the site showed many residents digging through the sand looking for survivors. The collapse followed several days of heavy rain, and the storm that passed over the area appeared to be the cause, according to the later report.

Conflicting figures on the injured

The reports agree on the death toll of five but differ on how many people were hurt. The Times of Israel's earlier entry gave the agency's figure of at least five injured. Abu Ali Express, a Hebrew-language Telegram channel that monitors Arab media, said Gazan journalists were reporting 5 dead and 6 wounded, describing a sandy embankment that came down on a cluster of tents in the southern part of Deir al-Balah. The Hebrew news channel News.co.il reported 5 dead and dozens wounded, some of them critically, and said the sand fell on two families. It added that emergency crews were still working to free those trapped.

The reports were published at different times on the same evening, and none of the sources reconciles the figures. No single number for the injured has been confirmed.

The sources also describe the location slightly differently. The Times of Israel refers to a displacement camp, while News.co.il uses the term refugee camp. Abu Ali Express places the tents south of Deir al-Balah.

What the Civil Defense agency is

The Civil Defense agency is Gaza's emergency and rescue service. It sends crews to collapsed buildings, fires and similar incidents, and it regularly issues casualty figures. Because it operates under the authority of Hamas, the Islamist movement that governs the Gaza Strip, Israeli and international outlets usually identify it as Hamas-run when citing its numbers. Its figures for this incident have not been independently confirmed by any of the organisations reporting it.

Where Deir al-Balah is

Deir al-Balah is a city in the central part of the Gaza Strip, the narrow coastal territory between Israel and Egypt on the Mediterranean. The area around it hosts tent camps for displaced Gazans, one of which was the site of this collapse.

Rain and life in tents

According to the United Nations, as cited by The Times of Israel, 1.7 million people in Gaza are living in tents and improvised shelters. Such shelters offer little protection when the weather turns. The Times of Israel reported that tens of millimeters of rain had fallen over the preceding days, flooding parts of the territory and bringing down tents. Abu Ali Express framed the collapse as one of the effects of the weather in the Strip, and News.co.il presented its report as documentation of weather-related hazards in Gaza.

None of the sources gives a technical explanation of why this particular embankment failed.

What the reports do not say

  • None of the reports names the victims, gives their ages beyond noting children among the dead, or confirms whether all of them came from the two families mentioned by News.co.il.
  • The number of injured remains unsettled, with figures ranging from at least five to dozens.
  • It is not reported how many people are still missing or whether the search has concluded.
  • No source explains who built the embankment or why it stood beside the tents.
  • No response from Israeli authorities, the United Nations or aid organisations to this specific incident has been reported.

איך בדקנו את זה

The collapse and the death toll of five were reported by The Times of Israel, citing Gaza's Hamas-run Civil Defense agency, and by the Hebrew channels Abu Ali Express and News.co.il, citing Gazan journalists and local reports. The casualty figures come from Gaza sources and have not been independently verified, and the number of injured differs between reports.
