Update, 5 October, 12:07 Israel time
The fuller text of the military's statement is now available, and it adds a ceasefire framing that the article did not have. In its English post on X, the IDF said Abu Oweimer's recent work on attacks against troops and civilians, and on rebuilding Hamas's capabilities, was carried out "in systematic violation of the ceasefire." The same post said he was targeted in order to remove what the military called the threat he posed.
The Times of Israel, in its live blog, carried the same wording, attributing both the ceasefire language and the stated reason for the strike to the IDF. It described the Nukhba Force as Hamas's elite unit and kept the Abu Awaimer spelling.

A Hamas terrorist who participated in the October 7 onslaught was killed in an Israeli strike over the weekend, the IDF and Shin Bet announce. The strike on Friday in central Gaza's Nuseirat killed Ibrahim Mustafa Suleiman Abu Awaimer, identified by the IDF as a platoon Show more
Hebrew outlets, including the Telegram channel Abu Ali Express, which reposted the IDF spokesperson's Hebrew statement, and News.co.il, repeated the announcement without adding new detail. The Hebrew statement places the strike over the weekend, specifying Friday.
None of the new reports says whether anyone else was killed or wounded, identifies which ceasefire violations are alleged, or includes any response from Hamas or Palestinian sources. All of the new material relays the Israeli official account.
The story as first reported
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the Israel Security Agency, better known as the Shin Bet, said on Sunday that an Israeli strike on Friday in the Nuseirat area of the central Gaza Strip killed a platoon commander in Hamas's Nukhba force. In a joint statement published by the IDF spokesperson, the two bodies named the man as Ibrahim Mustafa Suleiman Abu Oweimer and said he had entered Israeli territory during the Hamas-led attack of October 7.
Emanuel Fabian, military correspondent for the Times of Israel, reported the announcement, transliterating the name as Abu Awaimer and dating the attack to October 7, 2023. According to his account of the IDF statement, the commander had more recently been involved in pushing forward attacks against Israeli troops and civilians and in efforts to rebuild Hamas's capabilities. The Hebrew news site Ynet, in a brief alert, described the killing as carried out from the air.
Who the announcement concerns
The IDF describes Abu Oweimer as a platoon commander within Nukhba, which Israeli officials and the reports characterise as an elite unit of Hamas's military wing. A platoon is a small unit, below the level of a company or battalion, so the rank described is a field command position rather than a senior leadership role. The statements do not give his age or any further biographical detail.
The name appears in two English spellings in the material. The IDF's own English text uses Abu Oweimer, while the Times of Israel correspondent uses Abu Awaimer. Both refer to the same individual, named in full as Ibrahim Mustafa Suleiman. Variations of this kind are common when Arabic names are rendered into English.
What the Shin Bet and the Nukhba force are
The Shin Bet is Israel's domestic security and intelligence service. It is formally called the Israel Security Agency, which is why the IDF's English statement refers to it as the ISA. In Gaza operations it typically supplies intelligence used to identify and locate targets, and announcements of strikes on named militants are often issued jointly with the military, as this one was.
In Hebrew usage, Nukhba (sometimes written Nukhbah) has become shorthand for the Hamas fighters who led the cross-border assault on October 7. The Hebrew alerts from Ynet and from an Israeli television news service both refer to the dead man as a Nukhba operative who raided Israel on that date, and the television channel's alert, carried under the name of Nitzan Shapira, describes him as the commander of a Nukhba platoon. Israeli statements regularly flag whether a person killed took part in the October 7 attack, and the IDF framed this announcement around that point.
Where the strike took place
Nuseirat lies in the central part of the Gaza Strip, the coastal territory bordering Israel and Egypt that Hamas has governed. The reports locate the strike there but give no more precise detail about the site, such as whether it hit a building, a vehicle or an open area.
How the account was reported
The announcement originated with the IDF and the Shin Bet. The other outlets in the material, the Times of Israel correspondent on Telegram and on X, Ynet and the television news service, relay the same official claim rather than offering separate findings. The descriptions of Abu Oweimer's role, his participation in the October 7 attack and his recent activities are therefore attributed to the Israeli military and security service. The IDF statement as available to us is cut off partway through, so its full wording on his recent activities is not known here.
What the reports do not say
The reports do not say whether anyone else was killed or wounded in the strike, and they do not describe the weapon used beyond Ynet's reference to the killing taking place from the air. They give no explanation of why the announcement came two days after the strike. They do not specify which attacks on troops or civilians Abu Oweimer is said to have advanced, or what rebuilding of Hamas capabilities he is said to have been involved in. No response from Hamas, and no account from Palestinian sources in Gaza, appears in the material, so the Israeli description of the man and of the strike has not been confirmed or contested by any other party in these reports.
