An Israeli businessman who worked in Ethiopia was found dead in the restroom of a restaurant in Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital, and investigators are looking into whether he was poisoned. Ynetnews reported that the man was discovered in a bathroom stall during an evening out, and that local police have arrested suspects in connection with the case.

According to the Hebrew-language reports, the man had gone to the restaurant to spend the evening there. At some point he went to the restroom and did not come back, and when people went looking for him they found his body. News.co.il reported that poisoning is one of the lines of inquiry being examined, and that Israel's Foreign Ministry and its embassy in Addis Ababa are in contact with his family.

What the reports agree on

All of the outlets describe the same basic sequence: an Israeli man doing business in Ethiopia, a visit to a restaurant in the capital, a trip to the restroom from which he did not return, and the discovery of his body there. All of them say that poisoning is suspected, and none presents it as established. The reports also agree that efforts are under way to return his body to Israel.

Ynet, the Hebrew news site of the Yedioth Ahronoth group, and its English edition Ynetnews both say that Ethiopian police have detained suspects. Neither report names the suspects, says how many there are, or describes what they are suspected of doing beyond involvement in the alleged poisoning.

A discrepancy over his age

The reports do not agree on the man's age. Ynet and Ynetnews give it as 48. News.co.il describes him only as a man in his 40s. The Jerusalem Post refers to him as a 40-year-old Israeli businessman. This article does not attempt to resolve the difference. Ynet's Hebrew report refers to the man by a first name; the other outlets do not name him, and his full identity has not been published in the material available.

The role of the Foreign Ministry and embassy

When an Israeli citizen dies abroad, the Foreign Ministry, through its consular staff and the local embassy, typically acts as the link between the family in Israel and authorities in the host country. In this case, News.co.il said the ministry and the embassy in Addis Ababa are working with the family, and that there are efforts to fly the body to Israel.

According to that report, an autopsy is expected to be carried out in Israel to establish the circumstances of the death. That is significant because the cause of death has not been confirmed in any of the reports. Suspicion of poisoning is, at this stage, a line of investigation rather than a finding.

Israel and Ethiopia

Addis Ababa is the capital of Ethiopia, in the Horn of Africa, and Israel maintains an embassy there. The man at the centre of this case was described by all of the outlets as someone who did business in the country. None of the reports says what line of business he was in, how long he had been working in Ethiopia, or whether he lived there or travelled back and forth.

What the reports do not say

The material leaves several basic questions open:

  • When it happened. None of the reports gives the date or time of the death.
  • The restaurant. No outlet names the restaurant or says where in the city it is.
  • Why poisoning is suspected. None of the reports explains what led investigators to consider poisoning, or what substance, if any, is suspected.
  • The suspects. Ynet and Ynetnews say arrests were made, but give no number, no names and no indication of a possible motive. The News.co.il and Jerusalem Post material available does not mention arrests.
  • Who he was with. The reports do not say whether he was dining alone or with companions, or who went to look for him.
  • Official statements. There is no quoted statement from Ethiopian police or from the Israeli Foreign Ministry in the material.
  • His age. As noted above, the outlets give different figures.

Israel.com will update this report if Ethiopian or Israeli authorities release further details or if the autopsy findings are made public.
