Israeli soldiers opened fire on a person throwing stones at them in the West Bank city of Qalqilya, and the military says the shot struck its target, according to an alert carried by the Israeli news site Ynet, which cited the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). The alert said the shooting took place the previous day and that a hit had been identified.

A fuller account came from N12, an Israeli television news outlet, through its correspondent Nitzan Shapira. N12 reported that the incident happened during the night, while IDF troops were carrying out what the army called operational activity in Qalqilya. Several people threw stones at the soldiers, who responded by shooting at one of them in order to remove a threat, N12 said. The report added that a hit was identified and that no Israeli soldiers were injured.

What the two reports agree on

Both reports describe the same basic sequence: Israeli forces in Qalqilya came under stone throwing, troops fired, and the army says the person targeted was hit. Both rely on the IDF as the source of that account. Neither report names the person who was shot, gives an age, or describes the extent of any injury.

There is one difference in detail. The Ynet alert refers to a single stone thrower. The N12 report says that a number of people threw stones and that soldiers fired at one of them. The two accounts are not necessarily in conflict, but they present the scene differently, and only N12 mentions that there was more than one person involved.

The timing is also phrased slightly differently. Ynet's alert, published in the morning, places the shooting on the previous day. N12 says it happened overnight. Both are consistent with an incident late on the day before the reports appeared.

Where Qalqilya is

Qalqilya is a Palestinian city in the northern West Bank, lying close to the boundary with Israel. It is administered by the Palestinian Authority, but Israeli forces regularly enter Palestinian cities in the West Bank to carry out arrests and other operations, which the army typically describes in general terms as operational activity without giving further details.

The language of the IDF statement

In Hebrew, the army and Israeli media use the word mechabel, usually translated as "terrorist", for people who attack soldiers or civilians, including by throwing stones. Both reports use that term for the person who was shot. Readers should note that this is the military's own characterisation; neither report offers any other account of who the person was or what they were doing.

The phrase used in the N12 report, firing "to remove a threat", is standard wording in IDF statements. It signals the army's position that soldiers fired because they judged themselves to be in danger. The phrase "a hit was identified" is also routine: it means troops saw that their fire struck someone, without stating whether the person was wounded or killed.

Stone throwing and Israeli army rules

Stone throwing at Israeli troops and vehicles is a frequent occurrence during army operations in the West Bank. Israeli military policy treats stones as a potential danger to life, and the army has in the past defended live fire in such situations on that basis. Palestinian and human rights groups have long disputed when such fire is justified. Neither report on this incident addresses those questions.

What the reports do not say

Neither report states the condition of the person who was shot, whether they were taken for medical treatment, or whether they were detained. No Palestinian account, from officials, medical services or witnesses, has been reported. The purpose of the Israeli operation in Qalqilya and whether any arrests were made were also not disclosed.

איך בדקנו את זה

The shooting was reported by Ynet and N12, both citing the Israeli military; the detail that several people threw stones and that no soldiers were hurt comes from N12 alone. No Palestinian account has been reported and we have not independently verified the incident.
