The United Arab Emirates says its forces pulled 22 people off a cargo ship that caught fire in the Gulf of Oman. The Times of Israel reported that the claim came from the UAE National Guard, which said every person it rescued was an Arab national.

Two Israeli Hebrew-language outlets carried the same account in brief alerts. N12's foreign desk reported that the Emirates had rescued 22 people from a cargo vessel that went up in flames, and Ynet's alert service quoted the UAE as saying it had saved 22 people from a ship on which a fire had broken out. None of the three reports named the vessel, gave its flag or owner, or said what it was carrying.

Who carried out the rescue

The rescue was attributed to the UAE National Guard, one of the Emirati state's security forces. The Times of Israel report identifies that body as the source of the statement. The two Hebrew alerts refer more generally to the United Arab Emirates, without naming a specific unit. There is no conflict between the accounts on this point; the Hebrew items are shorter and less specific.

All three reports present the figure of 22 as the number of people rescued. None of them gives a casualty figure, and none says whether anyone aboard was hurt, missing or still on the vessel when the rescue was reported.

Where the Gulf of Oman is

The Gulf of Oman is the stretch of sea between the eastern tip of the Arabian Peninsula and the southern coast of Iran. It links the Arabian Sea to the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow passage that leads into the Persian Gulf. The UAE's eastern coastline faces onto it, as does much of Oman's northern coast.

The waterway is one of the busiest commercial shipping lanes in the world, used by oil tankers and cargo ships moving to and from Gulf ports. Because of that traffic, maritime incidents in the area, whether fires, collisions or security events, are routinely reported by regional and international media.

The reports use two names for the same body of water. The Times of Israel calls it the Sea of Oman, while the Hebrew reports use the Hebrew phrase for the Gulf of Oman. These describe the same sea, not two different locations.

Why Israeli outlets reported it

Israeli news organisations follow developments in the Gulf closely, and the UAE is one of the Arab states with which Israel has normal diplomatic relations under the Abraham Accords. Emirati official statements are regularly picked up by Israeli outlets' foreign desks and alert channels. Nothing in the reports suggests any Israeli connection to the ship, its crew or its cargo, and none of them links the fire to any security incident.

The Times of Israel published the item as an entry in its running news blog alongside unrelated international stories, and the two Hebrew outlets posted it on their Telegram alert channels as short bulletins. That format typically relays an official statement as it is issued, before further detail is available.

What the reports do not say

  • The cause of the fire has not been reported, and no outlet indicates whether it was accidental.
  • The name, flag and destination of the cargo ship, and whether it remains afloat, were not given.
  • Beyond the description of those rescued as Arab nationals, their specific nationalities and condition were not reported.
  • No statement from the ship's owner or operator, or from Omani authorities, appears in the reports.
