Abed Abu Shehadeh, a journalist and activist in the Balad party who was arrested on suspicion of contact with a foreign agent, has been released from detention. Haaretz reported that he was freed on Sunday with minimal restrictions and was not brought before a judge, after the police and the Shin Bet security service chose not to ask a court to keep him in custody longer. The paper said he had been held for five days after being arrested at his home.

The Jerusalem Post reported that no charges were filed against Abu Shehadeh, an Israeli citizen, and that his home was searched when he was detained on Wednesday. According to Ynet, the arrest followed an interview he conducted in Qatar with Azmi Bishara.

Why the interview mattered

Azmi Bishara is the founding leader of Balad and a former member of the Knesset, Israel's parliament. He left Israel years ago while under investigation by Israeli authorities and has lived abroad since, including in Qatar. Israeli law treats contact with a foreign agent as a criminal offence, and it was on suspicion of that offence that Abu Shehadeh was held, according to Ynet.

Ynet also reported that, a few days before his release, the police argued that Abu Shehadeh was not a journalist. The outlets that reported his release describe him differently: Ynet calls him a journalist and Balad activist, Haaretz refers to him as an Arab journalist in Israel, and The Jerusalem Post describes him as a Palestinian journalist.

What Balad and the Shin Bet are

Balad, whose name is a Hebrew acronym for the National Democratic Assembly, is an Arab nationalist party in Israel that draws its support mainly from the country's Arab citizens, who make up a significant minority of the population. The Shin Bet, formally the Israel Security Agency, is Israel's domestic security service. It handles investigations involving suspected espionage and contact with hostile parties, often working alongside the police, as it did in this case according to Haaretz.

Under Israeli procedure, a suspect held for questioning must be brought before a court if investigators want detention extended. By not seeking an extension, the police and Shin Bet allowed Abu Shehadeh to go home without a hearing, Haaretz reported.

Reaction in Israel and abroad

Ahmad Tibi, a Knesset member from an Arab party, responded to the release in a post on X. Tibi wrote that the detention had been a false arrest, as he had expected, and asked who had ordered Abu Shehadeh to be held for 5 days. His characterisation of the arrest is his own and has not been addressed by the police or the Shin Bet in the reports available.

The case also drew attention in the United States. Ynet reported that Jewish members of the House of Representatives contacted the Israeli ambassador in Washington, saying the arrest damaged press freedom. Ynet did not name the lawmakers in the material available.

How the reports differ

The reports agree on the central facts: Abu Shehadeh was detained on suspicion of contact with a foreign agent and has since been released. Ynet's initial report and a Ynet news alert described him as expected to be released, while Haaretz and The Jerusalem Post reported the release as having taken place. The descriptions of his identity vary between outlets, as noted above, and the police position that he is not a journalist is reported only by Ynet.

What the reports do not say

None of the reports set out what restrictions were placed on Abu Shehadeh as a condition of his release, beyond Haaretz describing them as minimal. No statement from the police or the Shin Bet explaining the arrest or the decision to release him has been reported, and it is not known whether the investigation remains open. The reports do not include any comment from Abu Shehadeh himself, from Balad, or from the Israeli embassy in Washington in response to the American lawmakers.

איך בדקנו את זה

The arrest and release were reported by Haaretz, The Jerusalem Post and Ynet. The police claim that he is not a journalist and the letter from US lawmakers are reported only by Ynet, and the description of the arrest as false is Ahmad Tibi's own claim.
