Beit HaBad Avtalion, Avtalion, Misgav, Avtalion

An olive press on the Yodfat ridge at Avtalion, founded in 1997, that cold-presses oil from rain-fed Souri olives and keeps a shop and a visitors' centre looking over the Beit Netofa valley

Beit HaBad Avtalion was founded in 1997 by Peretz Elbaz in the community of Avtalion, on the Yodfat ridge in the Lower Galilee, looking over the Beit Netofa valley. It makes extra virgin olive oil from the Souri olive, an old local variety grown on the Galilee slopes on rainwater alone, without irrigation and, by its site's account, without chemicals; the olives are picked in season, which its site gives as September to December, and cold-pressed, and it gives the oil a maximum acidity of 0.5% and the Olive Board's quality mark. Its shop sells the oil in bottles and tins beside honey, Ethiopian tahini, olive oil soaps and creams and gift boxes, and takes orders on its site for delivery to the door or collection at the press. By booking, guides and groups come to its visitors' centre for a short talk on olive oil and a tasting, with picnic tables facing the view and room for coaches, and its site says the lookout there was chosen as one of the Galilee's beautiful viewpoints, with a photo frame put up by the Galilee tourism organisation. The compound also holds the kosher café Atra and an information point for visitors to Yodfat, Avtalion and Hararit-Yahad.
