A 12-course tasting restaurant in a restored British Mandate quarantine station at Old Gesher, facing Jordan, cooking from its own five-dunam garden
Rutenberg serves one thing, a 12-course tasting meal built on the seasonal produce of its own garden, on the farms around it and on foraging, in a building at Old Gesher that the British Mandate put up as an animal quarantine station. The building was restored from 1999 with the Council for Conservation of Heritage Sites and named for Pinhas Rutenberg, founder of the electric company, and its site says three bridges over the Jordan can be seen from the window: a Roman one, the Ottoman railway bridge and the Mandate road bridge. Hila and Yizhar Sahar took the restaurant on in 2012, planted the garden in 2015 and moved to the tasting meal in 2020; since Yizhar Sahar's death in February 2025 chef Chen Weiss has led the kitchen. It seats eight tables a day, about 20 guests, by advance booking only, and invites them to walk through the garden with a glass of wine. The wine list leans on Israeli wineries and includes wines made for the restaurant.
