Kibbutz Hanita, Hanita

Israel's first craft distillery, founded in 2008 at Kibbutz Hanita on the Lebanese border, distilling fruit eaux de vie, marc, gin and bitters from local produce

Jullius is the distillery Yuval Hargil, known as Joov, founded at Kibbutz Hanita in 2008 with one dream, by its own account: to distil the finest spirits by hand from local produce only. Its site says it was the first in Israel to distil local fruit into eaux de vie, along with several grape varieties, and a pioneer in distilling honey and gin and in making bitters from local plants. The copper still, built by coppersmiths in Germany, runs on solar power, the distillery recycles its water and waste, and it adds nothing to its spirits. Its range includes Akko Gin, Jullius Bitters, Marc de Galilee, a mead, fruit wines and eaux de vie of apricot, pear, citron and bitter orange, sold in its online shop and at its visitor centre in Hanita, and its site says it is kosher.
