Sarig Winery is a family boutique winery on the Sarig farm in Moshav Merhavia, a farm whose roots go back to 1921 by the winery's account. In the mid-1990s the farm turned to wine grapes, the first in the Jezreel Valley by its account, and from 1995 it grew vine propagation material in a venture with the Golan Heights Winery, from varieties and rootstocks brought from France, Italy, Spain, Portugal and the United States; it says it was the first in Israel to grow Marselan, in 2007. The fourth generation founded the winery in 2005, and it now makes about 9,000 bottles a year from Shiraz, Grenache, Tannat, Marselan, Mourvèdre, Roussanne and other varieties grown in eight plots around the moshav, unfined and unfiltered, with a GSM blend as its flagship. Beside the winery a traditional French copper alambic distils grappa, arak and gin, and visits, arranged ahead, tell the farm's story from the vineyard to the wine and end with a tasting of its wines and spirits.
