Moshav Nes Harim, Nes Harim

One of Israel's first boutique wineries, founded in 1998 on terraced vineyards at 700 m in Moshav Nes Harim, with a Friday visitor centre

Katlav Winery was founded in 1998 by Yossef Yittach in Moshav Nes Harim, which immigrants from Kurdistan and Morocco set up in 1950 in the Judean Hills, at 700 m above sea level. He planted small terraced vineyards on the hillside land where the moshav's first farmers had grown vines, and learned to make wine from an Iranian Jewish family. The grapes are picked by hand at night, fermented in small steel tanks mostly without added yeast, and aged at least 24 months in oak, unfiltered; the wines are kosher lemehadrin and not mevushal. The winery is named after Nahal Katlav below the moshav and the strawberry tree, katlav, common there, and on Fridays its visitor centre pours wine by the glass or the bottle with cheese platters from Israeli boutique dairies.
