A family winery beside its own vineyard in Moshav Neve Mivtah, founded in 2013, with Friday tastings on the lawn facing the vines

Chitim Winery is the family winery of Atzmon and Sarit Hagag in Moshav Neve Mivtah, founded in 2013 after a trip along South Africa's wine route, when the couple decided to sell their house, buy a farm, plant a vineyard and build a winery. Atzmon, who has worked the land as a landscaper for 30 years, studied winemaking at the Soreq winery school; Sarit is a graduate of the Faculty of Agriculture in plant protection. The vineyard grows four main varieties, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and the South African Pinotage, with smaller plantings added later, among them Malbec, and it is farmed with as little spraying as possible: a small flock of sheep grazes the weeds and geese deal with some of the pests. On Fridays it hosts visitors on the lawn facing the vines, or in the air-conditioned visitors' centre in winter, with a tasting of four wines served to the table and cheese platters; its first wine, a 2013 Shiraz, won a silver medal at Terravino 2015.
